Kris Peeters (PhD) is professor and chair of the Department of Translation and Interpreting at the University of Antwerp (Belgium) and executive board member of the European Language Council. He speaks and publishes mainly on French literature and literary translation (in and between English, French and Dutch). Together with colleagues from Warsaw, Faro, Kaunas, Jyväskylä and Milano, he is preparing a European project about teacher training in plurilingual competences, including mediation and cross-linguistic mediation.

The place and importance of mediation in language teaching and learning
About presentation
This presentation introduces the notion of mediation, including cross-linguistic mediation and its place in the 2018 CEFR. We will look into the general methodology of the CEFR and discuss the place of mediation activities and strategies as a specific type of language activity compared to other language activities, such as production (written or oral), reception (written or oral) and interaction. The main characteristics of mediation will be discussed, but the main focus of the presentation will be on cross-linguistic mediation as an important set of cross-cutting competences that is key to developing learner’s plurilingual competences. In addition, some examples will be given of how cross-linguistic mediation can be implemented in the foreign language classroom and can become a very motivating learning goal in its own right.
