On Christmas Eve 1914, English and German soldiers started singing Christmas Carols in their trenches, able to hear their enemies in the other trench. The German hymn, Stille Nacht, was known by the English as Silent Night. They sang in unison.
The next day, a British soldier dared enter No-man's land to initiate a holiday truce with the Germans. The gesture was returned and both sides fraternized with the other on that Christmas Day.
