AAHD Virginia Resources

Provides an extensive list of public and private disability resource organizations in Virginia. Although it was last updated in 2012, the links still seem to be active.

School Liaison Officers (SLOs)

Work in partnership with the local school division and military installations to enhance the public school experience of military children; they connect families with educational opportunities and critical information about state and local school laws, policies, and standards and troubleshoot education-related problems.

The Arc of Virginia

Provides resources and services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They help provide tools for self-advocacy, and their website lists helpful resources to find available support.

Virginia Department of Education: Special Education

Provides information and resources to help answer questions and aid throughout the special education process. Links on the right-hand side of their website include information for parents, specific disabilities, early childhood special education, grants and funding, secondary transition, technical assistance and professional development, IEP and instruction, resolving disputes, federal regulations, laws and policies, state regulations, law, and policies, reports, plans, and statistics, private day and residential schools, as well as program improvement. The website also provides links to federal and state agencies, as well as other helpful organizations.

VersAbility Resources

Supports people with disabilities and their families each year in employment, community living, day support, and early childhood programs. Services range from coordinating developmental therapies for children to building successful business partnerships that provide staffing solutions for employers and provide jobs in Hampton Roads and beyond for people with disabilities.

Virginia Beach Special Services Library

Some individuals with disabilities may be able to apply to have talking books, talking book players, magazines, and catalogs mailed directly to their homes. This website provides more information on the service as well as instructions on how to apply. You can also search to find out what special service materials are available.

Armed Services YMCA of Hampton Roads

The ASYMCA of Hampton Roads has 3 locations to better serve military families in the area. They have a variety of programs and initiatives, such as as childcare, the Operation Hero program for school-aged kids, different camps available, as well as a list of upcoming events. The ASYMCA of Hampton Roads’ Regional Office is located at 1465 Lakeside Road in Virginia Beach (less than ½ mile from Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story). Some no-cost and low-cost initiatives include: Operation Little Learners, Operation Hero, FIVE STAR KIDS ACADEMY, Operation Summer Camp, and Patriots’ Pantry. Big Brothers Big Sisters Military Mentoring Program

Operation Bigs focuses on providing mentors for children in military families. Bigs are matched for long-term, one-to-one friendships for extra support. Bigs who mentor children from military families come from various backgrounds and can be military (active or retired) or civilian volunteers.

United Service Organizations (USO) of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia

Non-governmental, nonprofit organizations designed to strengthen military service members by keeping them connected to family, home, and country throughout their service to the nation; support is provided in the areas of deployment and homecoming, family, emotional wellness, entertainment events, information services, Operation Phone Home, Sesame Street/USO Experience, United Through Reading Program, USO Transition Services, Warrior Week, and Wounded Warrior Field Trip Service.

Operation Homefront - MidAtlantic Region

A nonprofit organization whose mission is to build strong, stable, and secure military families so they can thrive in the communities they have worked so hard to protect. Programs range from critical financial assistance and transitional housing programs to permanent housing and caregiver support services. Additionally, they provide recurring family support programs and services throughout the year that help military families overcome the short-term bumps in the road so they don’t become long-term chronic problems.

An interactive, online educational tool that helps military families become stronger in the face of challenges by providing both parents and kids a fun place to learn and practice important skills such as emotional regulation, goal setting, and communication; FOCUS Resiliency Training is available onsite at Naval Station Norfolk and JEB Little Creek.

The Planning Council - Military Family Respite Care
