From birth to age 5, your child should reach milestones in how he or she plays, learns, speaks, acts, and moves. Photos and videos in this app illustrate each milestone and make tracking them for your child easy and fun!

I have a number of milestones (0 duration lines) in my projects. These represent decisions, meetings, inspections and deliveries. I also use % complete to communicate with our finance department, customers and project team members. These factors don't seem to play well with each other in the schedules I have set up so far.

Hi Justin! Good question - the parent rows roll up the child row percent complete by taking a weighted average based on percent complete and duration. Because milestones have a duration of 0, they are not counted in the rollup. If you want to include these items in your parent row percent complete rollup, you would need to change the duration to 1. This would change the diamond icon to a square but you could format this to be black to make it stand out as a milestone.

I understand the math behind having a % of a duration 0 item and why the calculation won't work. Right now milestones are a penalty to the calculation. It seems like a simple solution is to have the % complete roll up exclude milestones in the weighted average. There could even be functionality that will "grey" out the cell for % complete if you change a task to 0 duration. That would satisfy the math purists out there who cannot accept a % of nothing

I am discovering the root cause as I go here and I can see what you pointed out to be true. The % complete for any milestone doesn't affect the roll up result (as it shouldn't) and when it is mixed in with other lines that have a duration value, there is no issue.

The problem shows up when I have a single child that is a milestone, the parent is affected. The error might be in the fact that the parent shows a duration of 1 when the milestone child has a duration of 0.

I am no longer using the milestone feature as the overall % complete feature is more valuable. The nested milestone should be calculated as a 1day and the 0 ignored. This would solve the problem and milestones would should up correctly in the % complete column.

My guess on the need for the second shift is for cases where the predecessor task ends at 5:00 PM. This allows the milestone to schedule in the same day and not be pushed to the end of the next day.

For this element, the global n attribute indicates the new number or other value for the unit which changes at this milestone. The special value unnumbered should be used in passages which fall outside the normal numbering scheme, such as chapter or other headings, poem numbers or titles, etc.

Im negotiating a project with a new client. My proposal was hourly and the client agreed, however, she wants to set milestones to make sure we have a timeline in place and certain delivery dates agreed. Can this be done? and if so, how?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and comments. As I expected there is no way to do milestones on an hourly project. Either convince the client to go hourly, accept a fixed price with milestones or use to-dos. All your inputs were helpful. I Think using to dos is the technical solution here.

If in any case the client wasn't new and he "prefer" payment with "milestones" instead of hourly, means the client is politely telling you that he/she wanted a fixed-price contract instead, you can try telling him/her that there's nothing wrong with using hourly where you can agree to do a "milestone" in X hours max, and let them know that they can limit the hours if they want, and they don't need to pay upfront where they can check the work and stop it at any logged hours if something goes wrong, etc.

I would follow Nabeel's suggestion and use the To-Do Lists function on your hourly contract. You may read more about it here. This is a simple tool to help you and your client monitor the progress of your project. This does not affect your Job Success Score or other stats and is not the same as using the milestone system of a fixed-price contract.

I recently set up a Jira project for tech infrastructure program with a 20 year old waterfall culture. My supervisor made a random ask to add "milestone" issue type to the instance. I believe the need is for identifying when the teams hit benchmarks, but they teams are also not used to providing customer updates in short agile cycles.

Depending on your Jira plan you can use Roadmap or Advanced roadmap to visualize and track your progress. Jira doesn't have a milestone feature but you can use release dates, due dates, start/end dates or your custom date type field.
