More information about the current default configuration can be found in the Quick Guide document that came with your device. The quick guide document will include information about which ports should be used to connect for the first time and how to plug in your devices.

When connecting the first time to the router with the default username admin and no password (for some models, check user password on the sticker), you will be asked to reset or keep the default configuration (even if the default config has only an IP address). Since this article assumes that there is no configuration on the router you should remove it by pressing "r" on the keyboard when prompted or click on the "Remove configuration" button in WinBox.

Dynamic address configuration is the simplest one. You just need to set up a DHCP client on the public interface. DHCP client will receive information from an internet service provider (ISP) and set up an IP address, DNS, NTP servers, and default route for you.

By default mac server runs on all interfaces, so we will disable default all entry and add a local interface to disallow MAC connectivity from the WAN port. MAC Telnet Server feature allows you to apply restrictions to the interface "list".

A router might have DNS cache enabled, which decreases resolving time for DNS requests from clients to remote servers. In case DNS cache is not required on your router or another router is used for such purposes, disable it.

Sometimes you may want to block certain websites, for example, deny access to entertainment sites for employees, deny access to porn, and so on. This can be achieved by redirecting HTTP traffic to a proxy server and use an access-list to allow or deny certain websites.

Initial configuration has DHCP client on WAN interface (ether1), rest of the ports are considered your local network with DHCP server configured for automatic address configuration on client devices. To connect to the router you have to set your computer to accept DHCP settings and plug in the ethernet cable in one of the LAN ports (please check routerboard.com for port numbering of the product you own, or check front panel of the router).

If initial configuration did not work (your ISP is not providing DHCP server for automatic configuration) then you will have to have details from your ISP for static configuration of the router. These settings should include

Default configuration is set up using DHCP-Client on interface facing your ISP or wide area network (WAN). It has to be disabled if your ISP is not providing this service in the network. Open 'IP -> DHCP Client' and inspect field 1. to see status of DHCP Client, if it is in state as displayed in screenshot, means your ISP is not providing you with automatic configuration and you can use button in selection 2. to remove DHCP-Client configured on the interface.

You will have one address here - address of your local area network (LAN) 192.168.88.1 one you are connected to router. Select Add new to add new static IP address to your router's configuration.

To be able to open web pages or access Internet hosts by domain name DNS should be configured, either on your router or your computer. In scope of this guide, i will present only option of router configuration, so that DNS addresses are given out by DHCP-Server that you are already using.

To do that, go to 'System -> SNTP' where you have to enable it, first mark, change mode from broadcast to unicast, so you can use global or ISP provided NTP servers, that will allow to enter NTP server IP addresses in third area.

When new bridge port is added, select that it is enabled (part of active configuration), select correct bridge interface, following this guide - there should be only 1 interface. And select correct port - LAN interface master port and WiFi port

Respectively, there are several ways how to solve the issue, one - check configuration if you are not missing any part of configuration, second - set MAC address. Change of mac address is available only from CLI - New Terminal from the left side menu. If new window is not opening check your browser if it is allowing to open popup windows for this place. There you will have to write following command by replacing MAC address to correct one:

To make services on local servers/hosts available to general public it is possible to forward ports from outside to inside your NATed network, that is done from /ip firewall nat menu. For example, to make possible for remote helpdesk to connect to your desktop and guide you, make your local file cache available for you when not at location etc.

A lot of users prefer to configure these rules statically, to have more control over what service is reachable from outside and what is not. This also has to be used when service you are using does not support dynamic configuration.

There are seven basic configuration requirements that must be met on a MikroTik router to provide internet access to all connected users. These tasks, some of which are not compulsory, are listed below and will be looked into one after the other.

System Identity is to MikroTik what hostname is to Cisco. Configuring system identity is part of the administrative configuration and is not compulsory. This is not part of the requirement to connect a router to the internet but is recommended especially when managing multiple routers. It allows an administrator easily identify a router.

In most cases, a dhcp server will be required to help lease out IP addresses to connected users. Without a dhcp server, assignment of IPs can become a fulltime job, and if not properly done, there will IP conflicts.

Nat configuration is required for systems on the LAN to have access to the internet. It allows packets source IPs to be masqueraded with the public IP on the Mikrotik router as they exit the router via the WAN interface to the internet. To configure NAT on a Mikrotik simply enter the commands below.

It can also be installed on a PC and will turn it into a router with all the necessary features - routing, firewall, bandwidth management, wireless access point, backhaul link, hotspot gateway, VPN server and more.

To use RouterOS after the free trial, a license key is required. You can obtain license keys in the MikroTik Account server. If you don't have an account yet, click on "New Account" there in the top-right corner of this page.

It worked, but the connection to some resources was painstakingly slow and often timed out. For example, download speeds from default servers during upgrading and reconfiguration of guix lingered around 50 KiB/s and typically failed eventually when downloading the kernel, probably because it is a large package.

But I run into a different problem: connections to some servers hang. guix pull hangs. Running curl -v against a problematic URL results in TLS negotiation timing out (curl: (28) SSL connection timeout) or a cryptography library failure (curl: (35) gnutls_handshake() failed:    pull.).

Pinging the server works, but pinging with a message at the size of the MTU (with ping6 -s followed by the number of octets) receives a response Packet too big for the first ping and then drops the rest. A TCP connection succeeds, but the TLS negotiation times out. The MTU is too large for the connection to this server.

I bought an RB750Gr3 Hex from baltic networks to use for a friend's network in conjuction with his existing equipment, turns out that it wasn't needed, and it can only be returned for store credit (baltic networks doesn't have anything else that we would want). He has a spare USB printer lying around without network capabilities (not old or crappy), and we realized that the Hex has a USB 2.0 port. But I've never heard of such a setup working from a mikrotik router.

The MikroTik RouterOS is very powerful and flexible and is widely used in all kinds of environments from a simple home user network to large enterprise networks. This tutorial is intended to help you understand the MikroTik RouterOS and to show you how to configure a MikroTik router from start to finish with some of the most commonly used settings. Much of the configuration and theory in this tutorial comes from the book RouterOS by Example by Stephen R.W Discher which is an excellent learning tool and companion to anyone beginning to dabble in the MikroTik world. The book can be purchased here: -b2.html

Note: when you click on the MAC address of the device it automatically appears in the Connect To: field. This is the recommended way to connect to a MikroTik device for initial configuration. The default logon credentials are admin (must be lowercase) and no password, therefore leave the password field blank and click on the Connect button.

To point the router to a public DNS server go to IP, DNS, click the down arrow to the right of the Servers field and type 8.8.8.8 tick Allow Remote Requests so LAN computers can make DNS requests and click OK.

Leave the default values for DHCP Address Space, Gateway for DHCP Network and Addresses to Give Out and type 192.168.100.1 into the DNS Servers field, change the Lease Time to 60 minute and click Next. When the new DHCP Server configuration to complete you will see this message. Click OK to complete the DHCP Server setup.

The rest of this tutorial covers two options to replace your fibre broadband router with a MikroTik router. You may need to contact your service provider for connection details. Something to note is that if you have an analogue phone connected to your broadband modem for VOIP services through your ISP, those configuration details are beyond the scope of this tutorial and are not included. As an explanation, some broadband modems convert digital Voice Over IP or VOIP data to analogue sound waves via a built-in ATA or Analogue Telephone Adaptor so that an older analogue phone can be used by plugging it directly into the modem. Again, these configuration details are beyond the scope of this tutorial and are not included. be457b7860
