It's just an opinion
My second night at the Arena Theatre, in Wolverhampton, this week and this time it’s to see Stephen K Amos. From nearly the first moment Stephen came on stage, he engaged with the audience, though he might disagree with the word ‘stage’. While joking about the size of the venue, he told us we were to be his Comedy Lab, and, with clipboard in hand, he would be ticking off new material that worked in preparation for his upcoming tour, and we would be the first to hear his new material.
You don’t just laugh at Stephen's jokes; you laugh with him, and many times he struck up dialogue with audience members to gain input and continue growing the joke, showing a great deal of empathy in his responses, making sure no one felt laughed at!
One of his ‘victims’, Jean, was the youngest person in the audience and, more than once, became the centre of the act as Stephen imparted his view on modern life to her. Something Stephen didn’t know was that the previous night, Lucy Porter had also picked out Jean and done something similar. What a lovely memory this will make for this young woman, and it wouldn’t have happened in a big theatre.
I’d not seen Stephen before, but his conversational style suited the intimate setting wonderfully. His jokes covered aspects of his life growing up, how he sees the world now, and many topical subjects, ranging from racism to Artificial Intelligence, sharing his opinions freely with the audience, often leading to uncontrollable laughter.
I will be looking out for Stephen's tour, and fully recommend it to anyone. If he should come back to Wolverhampton, I’d want to be there along with the rest of the audience. Wolverhampton loves you, Stephen!
