Gadgets aren't available anymore. Instead, Windows 10 now comes with lots of apps that do many of the same things and much more. You can get more apps for everything from games to calendars. Some apps are better versions of the gadgets you love, and many of them are free.

Here you can, for example, click on the first checkbox to make the sidebar always visible. This way you have your gadgets always in sight. A disadvantage is though, that the close button of maximized windows isn't on the top-right corner anymore. To fix this you can put the sidebar on the left side.

Microsoft Gadgets are lightweight single-purpose applications, or software widgets, that can sit on a Microsoft Windows user's computer desktop, or are hosted on a web page. According to Microsoft, it will be possible for the different types of gadgets to run on different environments without modification, but this is currently not the case.

The gadgets and the Windows desktop Sidebar were a hallmark feature in Windows Vista and Windows 7 editions of the operating system. Subsequently, Microsoft deemed them to be security vulnerabilities and discontinued developing and providing Microsoft Gadgets, which were no longer available by the time Windows 8 and 10 rolled out. Independent third party programs providing similar functionality, such as Rainmeter, continue to be developed and provided for later versions of Windows.

Live.com lets users add RSS feeds in order to view news at a glance. Building off Microsoft's start.com experimental page, Live.com can be customized with Web Gadgets, mini-applications that can serve almost any purpose (e.g. mail readers, weather reports, slide shows, search, games, etc.). Some gadgets integrate with other Windows Live services, including Mail, Search, and Favorites.

Desktop gadgets are desktop widgets; small specialized applications that are generally designed to do simple tasks, such as clocks, calendars, RSS notifiers or search tools. They can also be used to control external applications such as Windows Media Center.

A panel, or sidebar, is found on either the right side (default) or the left side of the Windows desktop in the Windows Vista operating system. Gadgets can be placed on this sidebar, and they are automatically aligned on it. Gadgets can also be placed elsewhere on the screen, which generally causes them to expand and display more information. In Windows 7, the sidebar is removed, although gadgets can somewhat similarly be aligned on any side of the screen. Gadgets are toggled between the two sizes via a button in Windows 7.

This topic introduces the Windows Gadget Platform. It discusses the evolution of the Gadget Platform from the Windows Vista Sidebar, the differences between the two platforms, and what you need to know when you transition Sidebar gadgets to the new Windows Gadget Platform.

The design goals for the Gadget Platform emphasize backward compatibility with Vista Sidebar gadgets, tighter integration with the Windows desktop, and reduction of visual clutter through a refined and unified UI. To meet these goals, the Windows desktop replaces the Sidebar as the gadget container and management layer. Gadgets were never physically constrained to the Sidebar, so removing this middle layer visually streamlines the platform and maintains the full functionality of Sidebar gadgets.

A major goal for Gadget Platform is maintaining backward compatibility with Windows Vista. Implementing any of the following modifications on existing Sidebar gadgets does not prevent them from running on Windows Vista.

Gone is the concept of the Sidebar as a container. Instead, gadgets are now hosted and displayed on the desktop. A Gadgets item on the Desktop context menu provides access to the Gadgets Gallery so that you can choose, install, and use gadgets. This change simplifies gadget management, streamlines and unifies the overall desktop UI, and eliminates the need for special Sidebar settings. Note that all gadgets are still owned by the sidebar.exe process.

A new desktop option to hide or show all gadgets by stopping and starting the sidebar.exe process is now available. On the Desktop context menu, click the View command, and then uncheck the Show Desktop Gadgets option. By turning off the Show Desktop Gadgets option, you can achieve power-saving benefits on your laptop computer, and privacy concerns for people who use their computers for presentations are addressed.

Another performance improvement for Windows 7 is management of the sidebar.exe process. In Windows Vista, the Sidebar starts multiple instances of the sidebar.exe process. In Windows 7, only one instance of the sidebar.exe process starts. This single instance does not start until a gadget is added to the desktop, the Gadget Picker starts, or a new user session starts with existing gadgets on the desktop. If the Gadget Picker is closed with no gadgets added to the desktop, or the last gadget is deleted from the desktop, the sidebar.exe process stops automatically.

The RunGadget method can be used to add Shared gadgets or Windows gadgets. The following table describes the installation locations for gadgets added by using the RunGadget method, and permissions for those locations.

In Windows Vista Sidebar gadgets, you could link onDock and onUndock events to event handlers, so that a visual transition effect was automatically used when the gadget was docked to or undocked from the Sidebar.

Microsoft researchers are aiming to change that. They are working on a new set of tools that other researchers and developers can use to train and test robots, drones and other gadgets for operating autonomously and safely in the real world. A beta version is available on GitHub via an open source license.

Ashish Kapoor, a Microsoft researcher who is leading the project, said they hope the tools will spawn major progress in creating artificial intelligence gadgets we can trust to drive our cars, deliver our packages and maybe even do our laundry.

If you're fine with downloading an unsupported executable that restores gadgets on any version of Windows after Vista (including Windows 10) then this is still possible, but it leaves me wondering why Microsoft has not taken the opportunity to mix the desktop with those wonderful Live Tiles and allow us to pin them anywhere? It seems to me like a roundabout way to have to activate the Start Screen, or Start Menu in Windows 10, wait for the Live Tile to update and then get the info I want without opening the app.

It is possible to fix the issue by running this script i have it set to startup, works everytime resets gadgets to working again might be useful for others having problems more info below save as .bat

The Microsoft Band will work with the company's new Microsoft Health system for consolidating health and fitness data from various gadgets and mobile apps. Unlike rival health systems, Microsoft Health will work with competing phones, not just those running Windows.

the risks that gadgets are exposed to are the same as those faced by any web-based application, e.g. Man-In-The-Middle or code injection. Similar issues existed in earlier versions of most web browsers but modern browsers have specifically implemented controls to attempt to mitigate many of these issues. These controls have not been implemented in the Gadgets platform, leaving them vulnerable to well-known and thoroughly discussed attacks.

 - We have you by the gadgets, black hat.

so indeed running arbitrary code is part of HTA's but because the sidebar and gadgets platform didn't mitigate it and were quite pessimistic, thinking that all gadget programmers would write safe code and wouldn't try to exploit or do things gadgets aren't suppose to do.

It can be asked about every flaw and attack and that's exactly the problem - it was by design a problem and wasn't secure it was discovered that since no mitigation and since you are really able to run and execute the malicious code with no problem these gadgets have a flaw.

As I see it, I think the security issue is a smoke screen. These "security issues" exists across many vectors, and gadgets, if they were such a problem would have been addressed much sooner than the dawn of the release of Windows 8. My opinion is that gadgets were jettisoned because they are a power drain on a Windows 8 tablet. It reminds me of how the ribbon interface was "to expose deeply buried functionality" when I think in reality Microsoft was really planning for a touch interface. So, whatever "excuse" Microsoft gives for doing something, I tend to look for a deeper purpose. Hopefully this will change with the new management. Does anyone know if it is possible to install some sort of gadget platform on Windows 8.1? Thanks!

Vista makes better use of such gadgets because it was made with them in mind, said Mistry. A Windows XP user, for example, might have to find an update on Microsoft's Web site in order to use some widgets, but they shouldn't have to with Vista.

Security has also been noted as a potential problem with desktop gadgets and widgets, due mainly to their rising popularity. The fear is that some people might put malicious code into the applications, or create poisoned applets.

There are around 80 gadgets and widgets for Vista available in Asia, excluding China and Japan, today, according to Microsoft estimates. The company predicts the figure will quadruple over the next few months, since it takes just a few weeks to create one.

As you may remember, Microsoft originally launched desktop gadgets with Windows Vista, and Windows 7 later made it easier for applications to install these gadgets on the desktop. Microsoft later removed these desktop gadgets on Windows 8 as the redesigned (and controversial) Start Menu made Live Tiles front and center.

Microsoft is hoping its .NET Gadgeteer platform, which started as a way for its researchers to develop prototype devices, will be adopted by hobbyist electronics makers looking for an easy way to craft new gadgets. e24fc04721
