If you're using a non-Microsoft antivirus/antimalware product on your device, you might be able to run Microsoft Defender Antivirus in passive mode alongside the non-Microsoft antivirus solution. It depends on the operating system used and whether your device is onboarded to Defender for Endpoint. To learn more, see Microsoft Defender Antivirus compatibility.

If you're using Application Control for Windows, or you're running non-Microsoft antivirus or endpoint detection and response software, make sure to add the processes mentioned earlier to your allow list.

Passive mode means Microsoft Defender Antivirus running, but is not the primary antivirus/antimalware product on your device. Passive mode is only available for devices that are onboarded to Microsoft Defender for Endpoint and that meet certain requirements. To learn more, see Requirements for Microsoft Defender Antivirus to run in passive mode.

Performance tip Due to a variety of factors (examples listed below) Microsoft Defender Antivirus, like other antivirus software, can cause performance issues on endpoint devices. In some cases, you might need to tune the performance of Microsoft Defender Antivirus to alleviate those performance issues. Microsoft's Performance analyzer is a PowerShell command-line tool that helps determine which files, file paths, processes, and file extensions might be causing performance issues; some examples are:

It's important to keep Microsoft Defender Antivirus (or any antivirus/antimalware solution) up to date. Microsoft releases regular updates to help ensure that your devices have the latest technology to protect against new malware and attack techniques. To learn more, see Manage Microsoft Defender Antivirus updates and apply baselines.

Windows 10 and 11 include Windows Security, which provides the latest antivirus protection. Your device will be actively protected from the moment you start Windows. Windows Security continually scans for malware (malicious software), viruses, and security threats. In addition to this real-time protection, updates are downloaded automatically to help keep your device safe and protect it from threats.

Windows Security is built-in to Windows and includes an antivirus program called Microsoft Defender Antivirus. (In early versions of Windows 10, Windows Security is called Windows Defender Security Center).

To ensure your device is secure while accessing work resources, your organization may require you to use Microsoft Defender Antivirus and other Windows Security features. Microsoft Defender Antivirus is an antivirus software that's included in Windows and can help protect your device from viruses, malware, and other threats.

Complete the following steps to turn on real-time and cloud-delivered protection. Together, these antivirus features protect you against spyware and can deliver fixes for malware issues via the cloud.

And yet, looking around for confirmation of this long-held belief quickly turns up an alternate universe, full of experts who insist that everyone should be paying for antivirus software. This advice comes not just from the companies that sell antivirus suites, but from reputable sites that perform antivirus software reviews (PCWorld included).

In September we announced new management capabilities for Microsoft Defender Antivirus in Microsoft 365 Business Premium. The new Active Threats page of that antivirus management experience has been rolling out for the past few months and is now available to all customers worldwide.

REDMOND, Wash. June 10, 2003 Microsoft Corp. today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the intellectual property and technology assets of GeCAD Software Srl., a provider of antivirus technology based in Bucharest, Romania. Microsofts acquisition of GeCADs technology will help secure customers by providing antivirus solutions for Microsoft products and services. In addition to developing new solutions, Microsoft will use the GeCAD engineering expertise and technology to enhance the Windows platform and extend support for third-party antivirus vendors so they can provide customers with increasingly secure and comprehensive levels of virus protection.

The knowledge and experience acquired from GeCAD will contribute to Microsofts understanding of how systems are attacked, enabling Microsoft to more effectively focus on platform improvements that will benefit customers and industry partners alike. Microsoft plans to focus efforts on technologies that address both current concerns and anticipate future needs. For example, work will be done to help increase todays limited percentage of customers that are protected with updated antivirus signatures, and attention also will be given to developing next-generation solutions for evolving threat models.

As part of its Trustworthy Computing initiative, Microsoft is committed to working with industry partners to help customers achieve higher levels of security. The GeCAD acquisition is an extension of these efforts. In April 2003, Microsoft announced a new Windows File System Filter Manager Architecture, designed to simplify the development process for antivirus software providers and improve system reliability. In May 2003, Microsoft announced the Virus Information Alliance (VIA), which it jointly founded with third-party antivirus vendors. The VIA delivers a wide range of information for consumers, including details about malicious code and Internet threats as well as a full assessment of threats based on its collective research results. GeCADs technology and expertise, with its strong track record in detecting and addressing virus threats, will help Microsoft continue to build on recent platform initiatives.

Terms of the acquisition were not announced. Details of the Microsoft antivirus solution, including product plans, pricing and a timeline for delivery, are not yet available. Microsoft strongly recommends that customers use antivirus solutions that are currently available from multiple suppliers, and that customers keep their virus signatures updated. More information on antivirus solutions and Microsoft is available at

Privately held GeCAD Software, founded in 1992, has been providing antivirus and security solutions since 1994 under the name RAV AntiVirus. Based in Bucharest, Romania, GeCAD provides antivirus solutions for a range of platforms and functions.

To a degree, yes. Some antivirus programs can do things like warn you or block you from visiting a suspected phishing site. Others may also automatically block suspicious emails that appear to come from a malicious sender or contain phrasing common in phishing emails. However, you cannot count on an antivirus program to be a failsafe solution for phishing protection. You still need to be vigilant and know what to look out for on your own when it comes to phishing, because an antivirus program won't be able to catch everything.

Any program running on your computer will require a certain amount of processing power to work, which can affect your computer's overall performance. If an antivirus program is just running in the background, it shouldn't really have any effect on your computer's performance. However, when actively running a scan of your system, antivirus software can noticeably slow down your computer. If this is the case, try to schedule antivirus scans at night, or at a time when you're not using your computer.

There is a common misconception that Macs are inherently immune to malware. But as Macs continue to increase in popularity, they're increasingly attractive targets for cybercriminals looking to deploy malware designed for the MacOS operating system. MacOS has a built-in antivirus solution called XProtect that can detect and remove malware. It works in the background and updates automatically to keep up with the latest threats, but it still may not catch everything that a third-party antivirus program will. So if you want to play it safe and boost the malware protection on your Mac, it's a good idea to add a third-party antivirus solution.

Antivirus software runs virus scans for known viruses and malware, watch for shady websites, offer ransomware protection and monitor unexpected behavior that may be a sign of new viruses and malware. You want antivirus software that can successfully identify these unknown online threats without flagging too many false positives.

You don't want antivirus software that taxes your PC's resources. If after you install the program, websites open slowly, apps download or open sluggishly or file copies take longer than expected, you may want to try another service.

Before you buy, check for discounts on a company's website. Another way to save: The prices we list above are for 10 devices -- if the company offered that package -- but you can trim your cost with antivirus packages if you need to cover three or five devices.

If you practice safe computing -- that is, you keep your software up to date, you use strong passwords (with the help of a password manager), you steer clear of unsolicited emails and you don't click suspicious links that may be phishing attempts -- you probably can avoid zero-day attacks and ransomware attacks. And with the free Microsoft Defender Antivirus software running on your Windows PC, you have a malware protection safety net if you do let your guard down. In fact, it is one of the best antivirus software options.

(Note: Microsoft changed the name of Windows Defender to Microsoft Defender and has expanded the service to other platforms.) This free antivirus program is built into Windows, and it's turned on by default, the antivirus engine does its thing, and this antivirus solution will cover the basics of internet security. Microsoft pushes new updates frequently. Defender also lets you tune the level of protection you want, giving you control over blocking potentially unwanted apps and protecting folders and files from a ransomware attack.  e24fc04721
