Nikon has been producing microscopes for almost a century, starting with a simple brass compound monocular brass microscope in the early 1900s. Today, Nikon microscopes are among the best in the World and are found in research laboratories in almost every country. The Nikon Museum of Microscopy features many of the older microscopes introduced from the 1960s to the end of the twentieth century, as well as several important accessories that have been used for both teaching and research.

Interchangeable parts made the Model S microscope a versatile tool for studies in biology, medicine, and metallurgy during the 1960s and 1970s. Depending on the user's needs, the microscope could be equipped with various combinations of eyepieces, eyepiece tubes, objectives, condensers, and stages.

The model S was equipped with a wooden accessory cabinet that could later be used for storage when the microscope was not in use. A two-sided reflecting mirror provided illumination for the basic microscope model. One side had a plane surface, which was used with the condenser. The other side had a concave surface, which was used without the condenser when employing an objective with a magnification of 20X or less. Illumination could also be provided by an ordinary 60-watt light bulb, with a daylight filter in place, or by the Khler method with a Nikon universal microscope lamp. Nikon also provided built-in illumination alternatives. A small 15-watt substage lamp was available as a replacement for the mirror and the S-Ke model was equipped with a built-in Khler illuminator.

There were four selections of eyepiece tubes available for the model S: inclined monocular, binocular, and two versions of trinocular. Four interchangeable stages provided a choice of surfaces for examining specimens and included a rectangular mechanical stage and a graduated, circular rotatable stage. The nosepiece could hold up to four objectives. A variety of achromatic and apochromatic objectives were available, designed specifically for either metallurgical (episcopic) or biological/medical (diascopic) studies.

To meet the demands of clinical laboratory specialists and researchers, Nikon has reviewed all aspects of microscope usability to develop the ECLIPSE Ci series of microscopes, which combines superior functionality with operational ease. The Ci is designed to ensure natural posture while viewing images, sample changing and capturing images. Bright, eco-friendly LED illumination reduces the need for frequent lamp replacement*. A variety of accessories are available that support various imaging techniques.

Magnification can be easily changed during observation with the touch of a button on the ECLIPSE Ci-E microscope body. The buttons can also be programmed for specific objective lenses for easy switching between specific pairs. User-defined light intensity for each magnification is automatically saved and reproduced when magnification is changed. The remote control pad can also be used to easily change magnifications.

Using the ergonomic binocular tube, which features an eyepiece that can be inclined from 10 to 30and extended up to 40 mm, the microscope can be adjusted for natural posture. The eyelevel riser lifts the eyepiece tube in 25 mm increments (up to 100 mm*) and can easily be adapted to suit users with different eye-point heights.

One simple click of the image capture button on the microscope base during observation enables the Digital Sight camera to capture the specimen image. Camera control software for tablet PC NIS-Elements L is equipped with a scene mode that can automatically set the optimum shooting conditions for each observation method. Since it has a network function, you can share images with a remote PC.

The microscope model that sets the standard for high school instruction, now with cool, long life LED illumination. Includes all the most commonly specified features. Rugged metal construction, locked-on parts. Superior DIN optical system and precision mechanical components assure parfocalled and parcentered optical alignment for sharp, unsurpassed viewing. Recommended for instruction through grade 12.

Featuring a zoom magnification of 7.5X and a long working distance of 115mm, Nikon SMZ745 microscopes are well suited for both industrial and biomedical applications. The adoption of a new total reflection prism produces brighter images with higher contrast, and the anti-mold design allows the microscope to be used in environments where the temperature and humidity are high. The SMZ-745T trinocular model comes equipped with a microscope camera port and a built-in 0.55x c-mount adapter, permitting direct mounting of Nikon DS Series Digital Cameras.
