Take a moment to watch this brief discussion of how developments in AI are impacting the field of Microlearning and how some platforms are already using the capabilites of AI to radically transform the way learners' journeys are customized in real time.
Although the list of platforms that classify as Microlearning while using AI is still short (we expect this to change soon!) we did find a study examining the impact of an AI-powered reading tool, called ReadTheory, on reading abilities. Students in an experimental group used the tool regularly over a period of 8 weeks in short <30 minute sessions where the reading materials were personalized by AI to appropriately challenge each learner. This AI-enhanced microlearning style approach led to significant gains as the experimental group scored an average of 41.98 compared to the control group's average score of 22.86 on the reading comprehension test - a relative improvement of 84% (Hidayat, 2024). This is compelling evidence that these technologies and approaches are already making a meaningful impact in classrooms today.
The activity below expired due to the limited length of the free trial that was used to create it so it will no longer be available to visitors after Julu 9th, 2025. However, if you would still like to give Microlearning a try for yourself, this page has several great examples of Microlearning opportunities that are free and open to anyone looking to try them out:
We have created a mini course on the impact of AI on Microlearning and your activity for this section of our OER is to complete this microlearning module using a form factor of your choosing. This choice is designed to model one of the key tenets of good Microlearning: Flexibility.
Important: If you haven't requested access to the course yet, please fill out this form. If you are still waiting for your password please contact post on the OER Blog Post or email Ken at peterson.ken12@gmail.comÂ
Once you have your credentials, you have two options:
1) Scan the barcode on the right with a phone or tablet to complete this task in a mobile form factor
2) Click the link below to complete it on the device you are currently using.
Once you have completed the module in your form factor of choice, please return to this page.
Thank you everyone for your participation! It looks like many of you successfully enrolled in the course and were able to complete it via the link provided and the whole course took an average of 2 minutes 2 complete - exactly the amount of time we were hoping for.
Presenters' Reflection
This activity required us to build a Microlearning module from scratch in such a way that it could be assessible to all of you. It revealed to us that, although Microlearning is a slick and straightforward way to learn, setting up a course or module does require a significant amount of effort, organization and training. Organizations that use Microlearning to provide training for their employees should carefully consider the many options and platforms available in the marketplace in order to ensure that they choose the appropriate tool for the needs of their organization and their employees. We thought this activity was appropriate for the AI portion of this week because the platform we chose had some very helpful AI-powered integrations that sped up the module creation process significantly and represents yet another way that Artificial Intelligence is enabling a revolution in the field of microlearning.
