Randy Schwartz, an emeritus professor at Schoolcraft College, holds degrees in mathematics from Dartmouth College and the Univ. of Michigan. His work has focused on preparing students for careers in engineering, science, health care, and business, as well as on bringing the historical contributions of Arab and other cultures into the mathematics curriculum. He was awarded the Democracy in Higher Education Prize (National Education Assn.) in 2000 for his essay arguing for a multicultural approach in mathematics education, and the Trevor Evans Award (Mathematical Assn. of America) in 2009 for his article, “The Birth of the Meter”.
