The creation of this time is like a journey of self-exploration. I chose "music" to be the theme and created a series of artworks with many kinds of art material. I wanted to look back at what kind of person I was before I step into the field of art therapy. For example, what impacted me to have the accomplishments of the person who I am now.
Although I liked painting and drawing when I was a child, everything changed after I was in touch with music and music instruments. From the elementary school, senior high school to college, I had attended the wind ensemble as a percussion player for about a decade. And I also learned the piano for a long time. Because of music, I made a lot of like-minded friends and had many fond memories. If my piano teacher did not tell me information about music therapy, I would not decide to study psychology. Music, makes me receive a fulfilling mind, introduces me to more people, and guides my life to a way to help others.
Even though I did not continue my study toward the field of music therapy, I do not feel regretful. In my opinion, it is an opportunity for me to re-do the selection. On the other hand, because of this, I have rediscovered a childhood passion of painting. However, music has not completely disappeared from my life. Those memories from playing the music instruments and performing with the orchestra and the sensation brought from music would become the energy to encourage me to keep going.
Like the artists Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky, they all had musical background (Paul Klee, 2015; Ku, 2008). Moreover, if they had put down the brush, they might have become excellent musicians. But, they chose to integrate music into their artworks. For example, Klee transferred the skills of playing the violin to color showing on the painting, and Kandinsky associated certain color with particular music instruments (Kennedy, 2007). As for my artworks, I used representational images, such as a musical note, musical instruments, or the status of listening to music, to present music in the artworks.
From my artworks, I want to represent what I was in the past as an amateur musician and now what influences me. In the beginning, I would complete the main composition and then start to imagine what kind of musical elements that I would like to put inside these established images. At this phase, to combine music and art and exhibit together was difficult for me. I tried to express the face of music and my memories of music in my pictures. Then, during the creative process, I generally began to regard music as the background of my personal life, and I attempted to give prominence to my status now on the images.
Listening to music and playing the musical instruments is a source of pleasure. Although I cannot join the orchestra and play the musical instruments now, I want to preserve those happy memories not only in my dream, but also in my artworks. Honestly, creating my art and viewing the completed work is as exciting to me as playing a live concert.
Music is part of my life. Even though present day, I am not currently playing music, I am glad that I can integrate music into my artworks. In addition to paint the visual patterns of performing music or like some artists used color to present the rhythm and melody of music, I keep thinking about other way that can combine art and music together. As I am learning art therapy, I think that it is feasible to incorporate music during the process of the art therapy session.
In fact, there are many artists like to listen to music while making art. An American artist, Laura Tovar Dietrick, said that "Painting without music is like trying to work in total darkness. Music is the light that switches me on in my work."In addition, certain types of music may inspire some artists during their creation process (Matthews, 2013).According to the theory of music therapy and some artists' experiences, music can elicit emotions and transcend language with its rhythms, vibrations, and beats, etc. So there is no doubt that music can also be used in concert with creating art.
After doing further research, I discovered art therapy and music therapy are kinds of creative arts therapy, which are extremely effective to use together. As for example with pediatric oncology/hematology patients. Using these two therapies collaboratively provides the patients with an outlet for stress management. Under selecting the common theme, the music therapist would sing and play the song. The art therapist would guide patients to draw, color, or paint what or how the music made them feel and ask patients to draw a final image reflecting the creative arts group theme. The result would reflect their self-concept and emotions. During the session, art and music would help patients decrease anxiety, distraction from pain, and increase relaxation response (Nesbitt & Tabatt-Haussmann, 2008).
Furthermore, there also had another research on applying art-therapeutic work plus listening to music with aggressive mentally- retarded teenagers. The whole therapy worked for 6 months. By the end of second month, they found that many teenagers’ self-appraisal rose appreciably and the positive feeling of self-image was noticed in their paintings. And the teenagers stopped trying to brawl, began treating each other more respectfully. During the final stage of the therapy, the teachers who worked with the therapists and children also pointed out that these children's aggression really became lower obviously. In addition, the therapist noticed the appearance of positive self-image and good self-attitude from analyzing their paintings (Tatiana and Anna, n. d.).
Both art and music have a miraculous power with medical treatment. Art can help individuals solve conflicts, manage behavior, improve self-esteem, develop self-awareness and insight, and so on. As with art, music can help individuals relieve stress, depression, and muscle tension, soothe mood, and provide relaxation. Thence, as far as I can tell, let clients listen to music during the process of art therapy can help they become more relaxed during the session and more focus on their creation.
