This project explores a hypothetical Herman Miller x F1 collaboration, reconfiguring an existing Herman Miller product to resonate with the Formula 1 audience. The aim was to integrate the high-performance aesthetics and dynamic spirit of F1 into Herman Miller's renowned design language, creating a unique offering that appeals to racing enthusiasts.
Formula 1 is an excellent collaboration partner due to its global reach, association with cutting-edge technology and precision, and its rapidly expanding, aspirational audience. The sport embodies speed and peak performance, appealing to a demographic that values innovation and high-end design.
Herman Miller's expansive catalog offered numerous products for reimagining in a Formula 1 style. While concepts for a convertible desk, various office supplies, and other furniture pieces were explored, an existing ottoman was ultimately selected. This choice allowed for a focused reconfiguration, transforming its design to embody F1's high-performance aesthetic and appeal to its passionate audience.
The design reimagines the ottoman, making it taller than the original to enhance its presence. It integrates recycled F1 tire material, offering fans a tangible piece of racing heritage and authenticity. Further emphasizing its F1 aesthetic, the central column features a visible shock compression spring, nodding directly to the performance engineering and dynamic suspension systems found in Formula 1 cars.
