Developing resources to meet educational needs is a complex endeavor. It requires competencies in education, technology, design, development, leadership, and collaboration.

I've been very blessed to have worked with a large number of fantastic people over the years, including students, academics, subject matter experts, visual designers, sound designers, programmers, editors, IT professionals, librarians, consultants, program evaluators, curriculum designers, administrators and others.

Some learners in this program were showing up in Edmonton not having studied the manual at home, in the months before the exam. This is a problem because during the practicum, time can be better spent than studying the manual for basic information.

The instructor and I collaborated to come up with this "flipped classroom" style intervention,

Now, more students study at home and arrive better prepared for the practicum.

Course Development for Credentialed Professional Programs

Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Architecture

I worked on establishing this first-of-its-kind online diploma, a collaboration between Athabasca University and the Royal Architecture Institute of Canada (RAIC).

With its technical, professional practice, and design studio courses delivered at a distance, establishing the program and the courses presented a large array of pedagogic, technical and political challenges. It was a great experience to work directly with the RAIC on this project.

This and Athabasca's subsequent programs give learners a way to pursue certification in Architecture regardless of their location, age or other factors.

Planning Your Night Shift as a Lab Tech

Planning work and prioritizing tasks is an important competency for students in the Medical Laboratory Science program at the University of Alberta.

The program was using a case study approach; I proposed this card-based strategy as a more interactive alternative.

Together we developed physical cards for use by students in a simulated night shift planning activity.

EPIQ Quality Improvement

Among health care professionals there's a need for Quality Improvement training; however, there are relatively few trained facilitators to provide the training. I worked in 2014 with Dr. Khalid Aziz to elaborate his EPIQ QI material into a complete guide for use by QI workshop facilitators, locally, nationally, and abroad. I've heard Dr. Aziz's EPIQ material continues to evolve.

Sharing Promising Practices with Peer Practitioners

Storytelling for Care: Using Stories to Facilitate Good Pedagogy and Design

It can hard to navigate to navigate the complex and often siloed work environments of the 21st century. We used shared storytelling as a way of bringing together values, information and intention within groups to guide action.

To give participants a personal experience of a collaborative storytelling approach, we developed and facilitated this 180-minute presentation and workshop for the BCcampus 2018 Festival of Teaching and Learning conference.

Through a series of facilitated storytelling activities, teams develop a design proposal, and reflect on the potential applications of storytelling in collaborative professional contexts.

"Writing Logically"

Undergraduate students in a health science program lack consistent skill in writing and reasoning, both pillars of evidence-informed practice. This intervention, which I designed and piloted, aims to give students practice and feedback in thinking in a structured way for professional purposes.

The design of the resource makes use of peer-review interactions, and integrates course readings into writing activities.

Open-Access Booklets Available

Four booklets were updated with open-access images. The booklets are for use with newcomer families learning about oral health.

Development of Print Open-Access Resources for Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric Dentistry Community Outreach Booklets Update

Newcomers may lack knowledge about children's oral care available in Canada. A pediatric dentistry Oral Health booklet series was redeveloped to meet this need. Community educators, students, and practitioners will be able to use it with no copyright restrictions.

This resource will be available in the Oral Health image collection online. They will be available on the U of A ERA system.

New Images Available in Open-Access Dentistry Collection

The University of Alberta Education and Research Archive (ERA) now has open-access images related to oral health in pediatric dentistry.

Pediatric Oral Health Images for Reuse

Resources containing images that are restricted by copyright may not be able to be shared with the people who need them.

To be available on the University of Alberta ERA Platform, this archive makes the images from the Pediatric Dentistry Community Outreach series available to students, educators and practitioners in free access, use, remix and redistribution without copyright restrictions.

Mapping the cognitive apprenticeship model onto a lab eManual

Lab manuals in print format are being upgraded into more accessible and interactive eBook formats. To be most effective, the development of learning resources should be informed by underlying pedagogic principles .

I collaborated with dental educator Dr. Tyler Verhaeghe on a presentation about pedagogy can be integrated into the design of digital resources, with his iBook being a case in point.

I was able to validate and explain Tyler's use of interactive multimedia, since I did a lot of educational interaction design work on LearnAlberta.ca and elsewhere.

The Educational Technology Capabilities Framework

Working with physicians at the University of Alberta in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, we found that many healthcare educators are unfamiliar with wide range of things that educational technology teams do in academic settings. To help bridge this gap, we adapted the well-known CanMEDS competency framework used in medical education to help our clients view our work through a familiar lens. Our adapted framework groups the wide range of work carried out by educational technology teams into seven main themes, or capabilities. With the framework, we hope to enhance collaboration between educational technology teams and those they work with. The framework is currently being validated by educational technology teams across the country.
