Here is a picture of the nuclear family. I am the one in blue and not old.
This is my dad. He was born in Trà Vinh in 1967 and the eldest of seven children. As the oldest child, the family depended on him a lot, especially after a portion of the family moved to America. He moved around America, first arriving in Atlanta, Georgia, then moving to Vancouver, Washington. He later settled in San José with his younger brother. His first years in America were tough as he had to work odd-jobs to provide for the family in America and Vietnam. As the years went by, the rest of his immediate family immigrated to America. My dad now lives a stable and happy (I think) life with his family.
This is my mom. She was born in Trà Vinh in 1972 and is the second oldest of five children. Out of her family, she was the first one to immigrate to America. This meant leaving basically everything behind to hopefully have a better life in America. She went to college for a little while before eventually dropping out in order to send money to her family in Việt Nam. During her time in America, she has only lived in San José with my dad. Her younger sister would later immigrate to America and live with us for a while. Today, my mom has a stable job and raised two successful children (in my opinion).
What I decided to do was a video comparing and contrasting my parents' refugee story. I did this because I heard what they had to go through and thought about the differences and similarities between their stories. I had a good time making this video so I hope you enjoy this video as well!
Looking Back
After doing this project, I can wholeheartedly say that I learned a bit more about my parents. I have heard a lot about their lives in the past (because they always gotta comment on how hard their lives were and how easy we have it here), but this time was different. When conducting these interviews, I had one goal in mind which is to gain a deeper understanding of my parents. I understood why my mom was always strict on education and the answer to that is in the video ;). I also understood why my uncles and aunts respected my dad so much and that's because he sacrificed so much so they can prosper. I believe doing a project like this should be 100% mandatory for those who have immigrant parents as it helps you to understand where your parents are coming from. If I could, I would do this project again without the procrastination part :D Thank you for taking the time to watch the video and read my portion of the website, I hope you enjoyed it!
