Hello, for this project, I decided to express my dad's story from when he and his family left Việt Nam to where he is now, in a video. This video reflects his experience in an optimistic way while also showing his hardships.
(I'm the one in pink)
I remember at the dinner table, whenever my Dad would eat with me and my siblings, he would talk about his past experiences, especially coming to Việt Nam or just arriving in America. I have always heard his stories in small parts, usually for a small lecture or just small talk. I wondered what his journey was like, how he felt coming to America, and how did he live after leaving his home country. Through these real conversations with my Dad, I finally got to hear the whole story.
In my Dad's story, his parents had to migrate from Hanoi to Đa Nang due to the war in 1954. At that time, my Dad was not born but his older siblings were. His parents did have many children
In one of the scenes in the short film, my Dad's family have finally arrived to America. I remember him telling me they were walking around on the beach one day when they encountered a friend, who arrived earlier in America. The friend took care of my Dad's family by having them meet and be sponsored by with the USCC, the United States Catholic Conference.
After leaving Việt Nam, his faith was less solid. After coming to America and going to many retreats, his faith became stronger and certain. He felt God was with him all the time and started to put God in all of his decisions in life, including his beliefs.
Through this project, I received a chance to listen to my Dad's experience. I was glad I got to sit down with him despite him being busy with work and caring for the family. Through this project, I learned how hard it was to leave Việt Nam and how to adjust to living in an unfamiliar place. I also got to hear more stories of my Dad's life that I have never heard before. Through this experience, I got to bond even more. Now and in the future, I believe I can ask him for more stories about his life.
And yes, I have showed these videos to my Dad; he loved them.
