The image to the right is one that I drew that I meant to help capture the idea of New Years in the Vietnamese culture. There are the animals from the common gambling game cua bò cá, along with a dragon costume from the the lion dance. There are also the red envelopes, along with the firecrackers, the cards and dice for more gambling, and the banner that says "Happy New Years". There are lanterns on top and multiple days form the calendar, which shows how they celebrate new years for many days in Vietnam.
Celebrating New Years in America and Vietnam has its many differences, but with the traditions that have been brought over, there are many similarities through the adaptations. While it's generally only celebrated for one day(the first of January), there is a lot of preparation behind the day, where people spend time with their families. This is also a time of reflecting on the year before and making plans of what we want to do in the next year to improve ourselves and our lives. New Years is a time at the beginning of the year where we celebrate the passing of a year, welcome a new one, reflect on our actions and what we can do to better ourselves, and a time to celebrate an exciting time with our family. Being able to spend this time with my family and celebrating together is something that I'm grateful for, as it brings everyone closer together, is a time that we can make new memories together, and is a time where I can personally reflect on how I can improve myself.
