The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted schools and students around the world, stealing away precious traditions and memories. Seniors, especially, have lost traditions: graduations; proms; parades; gatherings; and other rites of passage have all been canceled. Though this is unfair, so many students have understood that their sacrifices will save lives. All Seniors of the Morse High School Class of 2020 were invited to submit a piece of creative work that expresses a personal message of hope, strength, and resilience. Any mediums of expression were acceptable: visual art; music; poetry; essay; short film; etc. The three winning entries are showcased here and archived as part of the Patten Free Library and Sagadahoc History & Genealogy Room.
"In this piece of art, I wanted to represent the class of 2020's resilience. Despite the fact that we have lost things like graduation or prom, we will continue to push forward and become stronger. As the quarantine has continued I have found myself slowly realizing - wow, this is real - my senior year is over. Realizing things like: I won't get to be a captain in outdoor track this spring, and my senior trip to Italy - that's gone too. It became easy to relish in all my missed experiences and I became saddened by the loss of all the things I have looked forward to for four years.
"Why does this have to happen to me?" I thought. While making this piece I had to confront all these negative thoughts and acknowledge that there is still stuff to look forward to. I can choose to make the best out of this situation and not let it ruin the remainder of my senior year. So I chose to do this self-portrait and I wrote I am unstoppable, to encourage myself.
It might be a silly little motto, but I am going to hang it up in my room so I can look at it and remember how far I have come and think, "Coronavirus won't stop me from being happy." Maybe in the future I will look at it and realize that if I got through an epidemic okay, I can accomplish and survive anything."
"This is a short poem about persevering as a Morse Shipbuilder in these times of distress and confusion. I want people to be able to express how they feel and experience the full support of peers and teachers.
As a community, I believe all of the students, teachers, staff, and RSU1 community can get through this together and make the best of our situation.
Being a senior, I know that I am missing many traditions this year, but so are people across the globe, and first-years are likely bewildered by our circumstances. I hope everyone is doing well and that they enjoy this poem."
"My video, called The Filters We Give, depicts a self-choreographed dance to a song called "Filter" by Park Jimin.
The dance depicts the ways 'filter words' such as annoying, persistent, lovely, generous, emotional, callous, can all build or tear us down. These words are also written on my body, and as the dance progresses I show that despite the tension and fear the follows each word, when having the courage to wipe away the stigmas we are left with the most beautiful product: ourselves.
A complex being that does not need to be defined by others. The dance shows a sign of resilience that no matter what issues we face or hardships we undergo in our experience to find ourselves, we will always be 'me' or 'you.' That no one's words can take away the meaning behind me."
