Welcome to Phase II

Dear Students:

After what feels like months of watching, waiting, dreaming, and praying, I'm so pleased to announce that Phase II of our culture-enhancing efforts is being unveiled today. I want to commend you for your persistence in following through with the expectations that we've outlined for you this year. Your efforts are ones that we don't take lightly around here, and believe me when I say they have not gone unnoticed. Kudos!

Phase I was the first phase on our continuum of culture change. During Phase I, we set out to not only identify the most basic expectations that were emblematic of who we are at our best, but we resolved to reinforce those expectations as well. I know there were days when Phase I felt tough. For some of you, it might have even felt grueling. Being held accountable to a lofty standard can be understandably challenging when you may or may not have been asked to meet such a standard in previous years. And yet, the vast majority of you really stepped up and showcased your excellence in the little ways that mattered a great deal. Thank you, truly.

In Phase II, we're going to continue upholding and reinforcing our expectations, but we're flipping a switch. Instead of relying rather exclusively on negative reinforcement to elicit your commitment, we're going to use positive reinforcers to reward your commitment. Bottom line: you're going to have access to some perks and benefits as you continue to demonstrate excellence around here.

Phase II is going to be a blast. But keep your eyes on the horizon as you enjoy the seismic phase change happening right now. Because Phase III is coming. A day is coming when we'll be pivoting from teacher-led efforts to student-centered ones, from equipping students to empowering them, from using accountability-based measures to adopting agency-building ones. That's the phase that we're all chomping at the bit to get to. And we'll get there soon.

Until then, keep up the good work. All of us are super proud of you, and we're so excited to see you continue to uphold and enhance our shared culture with excellence.

Sincerely,
Dr. Chai
Dean of Student Life
