Meet the Teacher

My name is Melissa Hopper and I am one of the 1st grade teachers at St.Monica Catholic School. I am currently in my 3rd year teaching 1st grade and I am so happy to be a part of this beautiful school.

Overview

In 1st Grade, we will focus many of our studies around Theology, Classic Literature, and Greek History. We will be integrating many lessons together to let the students thrive with their own ideas and create works of their own through exploration and discovery. We will be using virtues to structure units to find the beauty, goodness, and truth.

Theology

Students will learn many parables using the Bible to make connections with biblical people, literature characters and the Greek people. We will study parts of the mass, sacraments, and study some of the lives of the saints. Our first graders will also have the opportunity to participate in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.

Reading and English Language Arts (ELA)

Students will focus on phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, fluency, story elements, grammar, spelling and writing. We will also incorporate many of the great works of literature into our studies.

History

First graders will be studying ancient Greece and using what we learn about the lives of the Greeks to better understand our own lives, communities, government, and culture . They will also experience the beauty of Greek art, architecture, and drama.

Science

Students will learn a variety of topics including plants and animals, lights and sounds, and sky patterns.

Math

Students will be working on addition, subtraction, time, measurement, and geometry. We will also focus on problem solving, articulating, and explaining our reasoning and problem solving methods.
