On October 21, 2023, the 41st annual Potomac Day was transformed into a delightful celebration of Taiwanese culture, thanks to the spirited efforts of students from the Formosa Association of Student Cultural Ambassadors (FASCA DC), and Millennial Global Youth Foundation (MGY). This annual community event became a colorful canvas for showcasing Taiwan's rich heritage, complete with Diabolo performances, bubble tea photo booths, a lively night market game of ring toss, and, of course, the staple Formosan Bear mascot.
The streets of Potomac came alive with vibrant colors and resonant melodies as FASCA DC students led a parade that captured the essence of Taiwan's traditions. The Montgomery County Executive, Mark Erlich, also marched in the parade to celebrate with the community.
The showcase of Taiwanese culture included Diabolo performances that left the audience in awe. The intricate tricks performed by the students indicated that this traditional art form had found a new home in Potomac.
Bubble tea enthusiasts were in for a treat as a dedicated photo booth offered an opportunity to capture the joy of sipping Taiwan's iconic beverage. With colorful and creative backdrops and another iconic symbol of Taiwan - the giant Formosan Bear mascot, the Photo Booth provided a unique and Instagram-worthy experience for visitors.
The night market ring toss was a true hit, as many tried their luck with a classic Taiwanese game. Laughter and cheers filled the air as players aimed to win prizes and enjoyed a taste of Taiwan's lively street culture.
FASCA DC students did more than just entertain visitors and their taste buds. They also seized the opportunity to promote Taiwan Centers for Mandarin Learning (TCML). Several students even engaged with the local political landscape by conducting interviews with three influential figures: Mr. Andrew Friedson (Council Vice President in Montgomery County), Ms. Linda K. Foley (Member of House of Delegates in Maryland), and Mr. Reardon Sullivan (Chairman of the Montgomery County Republican Central Committee) to learn more about the importance of public policy.
The Potomac Day event thus became a significant platform for not only the celebration of Taiwanese culture but also for fostering essential connections and dialogues within the community. The success of this initiative showcased the positive impact of cultural exchange, and the FASCA DC students left a lasting mark by promoting understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity in Potomac, Maryland. As the sun set on Potomac Day, the students of FASCA DC could look back on their efforts with pride, knowing that they had made a significant impact in bridging cultures and creating lasting memories for all those who attended.
