The 2nd annual Washington Wizards "Taiwan Night" kicked off with great fanfare on the evening of February 20 at the Wizards' home court, Capital One Arena, attracting nearly 500 ticket-holders for the themed event. As the event coincided with the fourth day of the Lunar New Year, many Taiwanese Americans brought their families to the arena to ring in the spring season.
OCAC Minister Hsu Chia-ching, Representative to the U.S. Alexander Yui Tah-ray and his wife, and Deputy Representative Andrea Yang attended the event to interact with the overseas community. Distinguished guests, including Jeffrey Horwitz, Senior Director for Economic and Commercial Affairs at the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), and Eugenia Henry, President of the Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce of North America (TCCNA), were also in attendance. Supported strongly by the TCCNA, the event demonstrated the unified strength of the overseas community in promoting Taiwan’s brand image and cultural diplomacy. Minister Hsu noted that "Taiwan Night" brings Taiwanese elements into mainstream sports venues, which not only fosters unity among overseas compatriots but also allows mainstream society to witness Taiwan’s creativity and vitality through sports.
This year's official Wizards giveaway was a Hawaiian shirt inspired by Hakka floral fabric patterns, incorporating imagery of the Taiwanese flag. MGY also introduced a limited-edition reversible sports scarf featuring the flags of both Taiwan and the U.S., accompanied by small "red envelopes" to add to the festive spirit. For the first time, the event featured a pre-game performance by Formosa Vibe, a cheerleading group composed of members from the D.C. Taiwanese American community. The group, which includes both adults and youth, showcased cross-generational participation and community cohesion. Their performance blended Taiwanese pop music and "T-POP" rhythms, bringing Taiwanese culture to the NBA stage. The diverse backgrounds of the members—including individuals of Jewish and German descent—highlighted the open and inclusive spirit of Taiwanese culture, earning warm applause and leaving a deep impression on mainstream fans.
The game itself was equally exciting. Fueled by the enthusiasm of the Taiwanese community, the Wizards played at full throttle, ultimately defeating the Indiana Pacers 131-118 to secure a home victory. Every time the Wizards scored, the Taiwanese fans in the stands erupted in applause and cheers, bringing the energy of "Taiwanese-style rooting" to the NBA arena and adding to the New Year festivities.
Jennifer Lee, project leader of MGY, which was responsible for promoting the event, pointed out that attendance grew significantly compared to the inaugural year, reflecting the continued growth of the Taiwanese community’s cohesion. By combining NBA games with Taiwanese cultural elements, mainstream sports venues have become a stage for cultural exchange.
Additionally, Wei Chuan Dragons cheerleaders Mizuki (Lin Xiang) and Dahye Lee attended as fans to celebrate with the community and experience the charm of American professional basketball firsthand. The two also engaged in friendly interactions with the Wizards' cheerleaders courtside, sharing their respective "cheering vibes" and adding a relaxed, cross-cultural flair to the event.
MGY founder David Tang stated that the Wizards' "Taiwan Night" has become an important annual brand event. He noted that they will continue to use mainstream sports platforms to deepen Taiwan-U.S. exchanges, ensuring that Taiwanese elements are seen on the international stage while creating more opportunities for overseas Taiwanese to gather and connect.
