Spark Plug Replacement
Spark plugs are a small part that can cause huge problems. Their job is to ignite the fuel in your engine, helping it start. The plugs themselves are cheap, and can be replaced on your own, if you know how. However, if installed incorrectly they can cause damage to your car, so you're going to want a pro to take care of it.
Brake Work
We all know why brake work is important, especially because one quarter of all car accidents are caused by a failure to stop. Repairs can take the form of replacing brake pads, which naturally wear down as you use them, and aren't too costly to fix. This type of repair may also cover brake lines, disc, drum and rotor repair.
Oil Changes
Every 5,000 miles or so, you need to change the oil in your car to keep your engine running smoothly. The reason is simply that dirt and debris build up in a car's oil over time, making its ability to lubricate your engine properly decrease. Not only that, but having records of frequent oil changes means your car is considered more valuable when you sell it.
Tune-up
A tune-up should also include cleaning or replacing the spark plugs and, on older cars, the distributor cap and rotor. Tune-ups may also include replacement of the fuel filter, oxygen sensor, PCV valve, and spark plug wires. If your vehicle contains platinum spark plugs, they may not need to be changed as frequently.
Oxygen Sensor Replacement
Oxygen sensors measure the concentration of oxygen in the exhaust gabs in order to optimize engine performance and emissions. It's actually something that you can sometimes fix yourself, but many manufacturers now have special covers over it, meaning you need a mechanic to get to it.
The Ignition System
A car's ignition system includes its battery, starter, and the ignition itself. If they aren't working, the car won't start, or might end up stopping in the middle of the road. Luckily, swapping a battery out is simple.
Steering and Suspension
Your steering system and suspension system are two separate systems that work in tandem to keep your car under control. The suspension system supports the weight of your vehicle, provides a smooth ride and creates stable road control, drivability and handling.
Shocks and Struts
When struts and shocks wear, it allows vehicle tires to bounce, making them less able to grip the road. Thus affecting steering, handling and braking. Shocks and struts are not just for ride comfort: their primary function, tire control, is a much more important role.
Air Filter Replacement
Increased fuel efficiency. Replacing a clogged air filter can increase fuel efficiency and improve acceleration.
Fuel Cap Tightening
Loose fuel caps are actually a main reason why the "check engine" light in a car comes on. Not getting them fixed will cost you in the long run, because it'll make your gas mileage go down (meaning you burn fuel faster, and need to fill your tank more often.)
The Electrical System
Along the same lines as batteries, other electrical components in your car that commonly need replacement are fuses and light bulbs. Luckily, these repairs can usually be done at home, and you just need to make sure you've gotten your hands on the right fuses or light bulbs.
