The first rapid transit railway service in Barcelona was founded in 1863 by the private company Ferrocarril de Barcelona a Sarri ("Railway from Barcelona to Sarri", after 1916 Sarri joined the municipality of Barcelona). Later this line evolved in what now is basically the current L6 metro service. This railway system, now part of the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya company, was later inspired by the London Underground naming style having long names for the lines ("Sarri line", "Balmes line"...).

Much later, in the 1920s, a second and a third rapid transit railway systems were founded with the construction of the Gran Metro between Lesseps and the Plaa de Catalunya (part of the modern L3) and, two years later, the Metro Transversal (now part of L1). This third one was built between the Plaa de Catalunya and la Bordeta to link the city centre with the Plaa d'Espanya and Montjuc, the site of the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition. These two later rapid transit companies contrasted with the first one in being inspired by the Mtropolitain de Paris (from where the word "metro" comes).

In addition to those, Renfe and FGC trains and the increasingly important tram routes and stations are displayed on most recent maps, including the info maps in the metro stations, all in a single variety of dark green.

Construction work is taking place currently on L9/L10, which when finished will run from Badalona and Santa Coloma de Gramenet to the Zona Franca district and El Prat International Airport. The lines, which share a central section between Bon Pastor and Can Tries | Gornal, will be the longest automated metro line in Europe, at 47.8 kilometres (29.7 mi), and combined will have 52 stations. The project was approved in 2000[5] but has been challenged by some technical difficulties and some of their sections are pending further geological analysis. The first section of Line 9 that runs between La Sagrera and Can Zam opened in 2009, and by June 2010 eleven new stations on the new Lines L9 and L10 had opened. As of February 2016, the 15-station, 19.6-kilometre (12.2 mi) south section of Line L9 between Zona Universitria and the airport (Aeroport T1 station) opened.[6]

An overwhelming majority of stations in the network lack related buildings or structures aboveground, mostly consisting of an access with stairs, escalators or elevators. The official TMB metro indicator, a red rhombus with a M inside, remains unused by FGC lines, which use their company logo and a different rhombus-shaped logo (actually rather similar to the one used inside the Madrid Metro) inside stations. Below ground their decoration is remarkably sober, with the exception of all the new stations.

The L9 Sud line also runs to Barcelona Airport both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 you cannot use the T-Casual or normal metro tickets to travel to the Airport with the metro system. You would need to purchase a special metro airport ticket. The BCN Essentials Pass and City Pass and HolaBCN card all include the metro ticket for the airport.

The main hubs for the metro system are at Plaa Catalunya (at the top of Las Rambls), Passeig de Gracia and Plaa d'Espanya. These metro stations have multiple different metro lines that you can change at to take you anywhere you want in the city.

The transport zone system in Barcelona is a way of setting prices for transport tickets depending on the distance of the destination from the centre of Barcelona. The further the distance to the destination the higher the zone number and the higher the cost of the transport ticket. The transport system includes buses, trams, and the metro system. The city is divided into six zones, with Zone 1 being the most central zone and Zone 6 the outer most zone. Most tourist visitors to the city would only be interested in travelling in the Zone 1 area which has all the major Barcelona tourist attrations including Gothic Quarter, Sagrada Familia, Casa Mila, Casa Battlo and FC Barcelona etc. Barcelona International Airport is included in Zone 1 however a special metro ticket is needed to travel to BCN airport from the city centre.

Locals in Barcelona would normally use the T-Casual ticket which offers 10 rides on the metro system in one ticket. However the T-Casual ticket is not necessarily the best choice of metro ticket for a tourist visitor. Tourist visitors typically need to take many journeys per day which could easily use up the 10 journeys offered by the T-Casual. Typically tourist are in the city for around 2 to 5 days and may want to use the metro system many times without concern that their tickets will run out of journeys or have journeys still left on their T-Casual when they leave. In addition, tourists may wish to travel to Barcelona Airport on the metro which the normal T-Casual pass does not cover you for. There is a special metro pass that are more suited for a tourist visit called the HolaBCN card.

The vending machines also enable you to obtain your HolaBCN when you buy this online. When you purchase online you would be sent a code that you can enter into the metro ticket vending machines to obtain your tickets.

You can buy tickets for individual journeys for the metro but if you are here for more than one day or intend taking more than 5 journeys on the metro or buses it's best to buy the T-Casual ticket (see below).

The T-Casual ticket (Zone 1 ticket) is another type of transport card which you can purchase at the entrance to any metro station. Unlike the Barcelona Transport Card a T-Casual ticket will only entitle you to 10 journeys on the metro, FGC (FGC run train lines similar to the metro around the city centre) buses, tram and RENFE all Zone 1 areas. The main city centre areas are all in Zone 1 however note that the T-Casual is not valid to Barcelona Airport.

You can buy a T-Casual from any metro stop and from the Airport at the entrance to the RENFE train. Please note that the T-Casual (Zone 1) is valid for journeys in Barcelona City Centre Zone 1 on the metro, FGC and TMB buses, Tram and RENFE. However the T-Casual is not valid on the metro to Barcelona airport.

A little known point about the T-Casual ticket. The T-Casual ticket can be used on more than one means of transport and all be counted as a single journey provided that your journey is less than 1 hour and 15 minutes. This means, for example, you can make changes at metro stops (provided you don't leave the metro), then leave the metro and jump on a bus to finish your journey or vice versa as long as the total length of the journey is less than 1 hour and 15 minutes. NOTE you cannot re-enter the metro once you have left it - this would count as another journey.

Once you've purchased your T-Casual ticket and want to use the metro you have to put the ticket into a ticket validation machine at the metro entrance. The machine checks the ticket and then marks it on the back with a printed day and time stamp. You then have to pull the ticket out of the machine slot, and in that instant, the turnstile lock is released, and you can pass through.

The T-Casual card can be damaged if you keep it in your pocket and crease it. If the card becomes unreadable by the ticket validation machine due to damage, take the card to the metro attendants box and say " Esta tarjeta no funciona" Which means this card does not work. They will then issue you with a new T-Casual card free of charge with the respective number of journeys that was left on the old card.

You can purchase your metro tickets from the automatic ticket vending machines which are present at the entrance of all metro stations. The metro ticket vending machines will accept coins, notes and credit card as a form of payment. However we advise for you to have a number of means of payments because sometimes one form of payment does not work. If one of the payment methods does not work, or if you have any other issue with your tickets, you can go to the small metro office that is often present at the entrance to the metro station and ask for assistance. However, note, there are many stations that do not have attendants - this is why it is best to be prepared and have a number of forms of payment for your metro tickets. ff782bc1db
