Welcome to Messages ("App"), developed by Advance Logic ("Company", "Developer"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your personal data when you use our App or related services ("Services"). It also outlines your rights under applicable data protection laws, including the EU General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR"), the California Consumer Privacy Act ("CCPA"), the Brazilian General Data Protection Law ("LGPD"), and Google Play policies. Our goal is to be transparent about our data practices and ensure your privacy is protected.
This Privacy Policy is an integral part of our End User License Agreement ("EULA"). Any capitalized terms not defined here have the meanings given in the EULA.
We collect only the information necessary to provide and improve the App's features, such as messaging, notifications, and local data management. Below, we detail the types of information we collect and how we use it.
Device Information
What We Collect: We collect device-related data, such as hardware model, operating system version, and system settings.
How We Use It: This helps us optimize the App for your device, troubleshoot issues, and ensure compatibility. For example, we use it to detect supported features or handle crashes. This data is processed locally or anonymized when shared with third-party analytics tools.
Network and Internet Access
What We Collect: The App requires internet access to enable certain features, such as cloud synchronization, analytics, and ad display. This may include IP address or network type (anonymized).
How We Use It: It allows syncing backups (if enabled), sending usage data to improve the App, and loading ads. We do not track your browsing history or sensitive online activity.
Notification Access
What We Collect: The App may send notifications to your device, including details like message previews or reminders.
How We Use It: Notifications alert you to incoming messages or App updates, enhancing your experience. You can manage or disable them in your device settings at any time.
We prioritize your privacy by keeping most data local to your device.
All data related to contacts and messages is stored locally on your device. We do not upload or store this data on external servers. Any analytics data collected through third-party services (e.g., Firebase) is anonymized to prevent identification.
We employ appropriate security measures to protect your personal data, including encryption for local storage and regular security audits. However, no method of data transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. We recommend using strong device locks and keeping your software updated.
The App requests specific Android permissions only when necessary for core features. We explain each one below, including why it's needed and how it's used. You can review and revoke permissions in your device settings.
Notification Access
The App may utilize the POST_NOTIFICATIONS permission to send notifications related to incoming messages. These notifications are solely for the purpose of enhancing your user experience within the App.
android.permission.POST_NOTIFICATIONS
com.android.alarm.permission.SET_ALARM
SMS Access
The permissions READ_SMS, WRITE_SMS, SEND_SMS, RECEIVE_SMS, RECEIVE_MMS, and Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED may be required to access your device's SMS, send SMS/MMS, receive messages/MMS, and receive delivery reports of successfully sent messages.
android.permission.READ_SMS
android.permission.WRITE_SMS
android.permission.SEND_SMS
android.permission.RECEIVE_SMS
android.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED
Contacts Access
The permission READ_CONTACTS may be required to access your device's contacts locally on your device in order to display and manage contacts, including contact numbers and names. We do not store or transmit your contact data to any third parties.
android.permission.READ_CONTACTS
Phone Call
The permissions CALL_PHONE and READ_PHONE_STATE allow the App to make calls from the message details screen.
android.permission.CALL_PHONE
android.permission.READ_PHONE_STATE
Network Access
This may be required for downloading updates or serving advertisements. It is also necessary for Google AdMob, Firebase, and other third-party services integrated into the App.
android.permission.INTERNET
android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE
Wake Lock
The permission WAKE_LOCK allows the App to turn your device on if the screen is off and show notifications when a message arrives.
android.permission.WAKE_LOCK
System Alert Window
The SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW permission allows the App to display overlays or floating windows above other apps. This is useful for the "After Call Screen" feature, enabling the App to show a floating video player or UI.
Foreground Service
The FOREGROUND_SERVICE permission allows the App to run backup/restore in the background so you can use other apps while backup/restore is running.
android.permission.FOREGROUND_SERVICE
android.permission.FOREGROUND_SERVICE_DATA_SYNC
Querying Another App Package
We use <queries> to get the com.whatsapp package to detect WhatsApp numbers of your contacts and enable calling intents to simplify calling, video calling, or voice calling to WhatsApp using our App.
<queries> <package android:name="com.whatsapp" /> </queries>
We integrate trusted third-party libraries and SDKs to enhance functionality. These are listed below with their purposes. None of them store or transmit your messages or contact data unless anonymized for analytics or ads.
Google Ads: We use Google AdMob to display ads within the App. AdMob may collect data to serve personalized ads, including device identifiers, usage data, and location (if permitted). You can adjust your ad preferences in your device settings. For more details, see Google's Privacy Policy.
Firebase Analytics: We use Firebase to collect anonymized App usage data, such as feature engagement and crash reports, to improve the App's performance. This data does not personally identify you. For more details, see Firebase Privacy and Security.
Realm DB: We use RealmDB (io.realm) to store and manage data locally on your device. This database does not store or transmit your messages or contact data to any third parties.
SDP: We use SDP (com.intuit.sdp:sdp-android) to manage a responsive and flexible user interface across different device ratios and sizes.
Glide: We use Glide (com.github.bumptech.glide:glide) to efficiently display images and media within the App.
EventBus: We use EventBus (org.greenrobot:eventbus) to efficiently send events and data within the App.
Libphonenumber: We use LibPhonenumber (io.michaelrocks:libphonenumber-android) to remove country codes or detect numbers with country codes in messages.
Android SMS-MMS Library: We use the Android SMS-MMS library (com.klinkerapps:android-smsmms) for easily sending SMS and MMS messages on Android devices.
Parse Java or Kotlin Class to JSON: We use Moshi (com.squareup.moshi) for Android, Java, and Kotlin to parse JSON into Java and Kotlin classes. This library simplifies the process of converting user data into a JSON format for backup and restoration. Users can select to back up or restore their data using a .json file stored in local storage.
Swipe Decorator: We use SwipeDecorator (it.xabaras.android:recyclerview-swipedecorator) to implement swipe features for deleting or archiving messages.
Biometric Lock: We use the Biometric library (androidx.biometric:biometric) to implement a feature that allows users to lock and unlock their chats using biometric authentication.
Lottie: We use Lottie (com.airbnb.android:lottie) to show animations in our App.
Room DB: We use RoomDB (androidx.room:room) to store reminder data locally on your device.
Hilt Dependency: We use Hilt DI to simplify the management of dependencies in an MVVM architecture. This helps reduce boilerplate code and improves testability by automatically providing dependencies where needed.
String Obfuscation: We use io.michaelrocks.paranoid to secure and obfuscate strings and texts used within the App for enhanced data and code security.
All App data is stored locally on your device. If you delete the App, all locally stored data will be deleted from your device. Any data collected by third-party services is subject to their data retention policies.
Third-Party Data: Any data collected by third-party services (e.g., Firebase Analytics, Google AdMob) is subject to their respective data retention policies. We do not control these retention periods but ensure that any data we share is anonymized. For example, anonymized analytics data may be retained for up to 14 months by Firebase to support App improvements.
NOTE: No in-app purchases or subscriptions have been added to the App as of now, but we may add them in the future.
The App offers both subscription-based and in-app purchase options to unlock premium features.
Subscriptions
We offer multiple subscription plans (e.g., monthly, yearly). Prices vary by country and are displayed in the App or Google Play Store.
