Hi there! I’m Kittie, and I am thrilled to welcome you to my table!
For me, Hong Kong-style Mahjong isn’t just a game. The rhythmic clack-clack-clacking of tiles being shuffled late into the night —it’s the soundtrack of childhood memories, and teaching this fast paced game is my way of keeping those deep cultural roots alive. As a child of Hong Kong immigrants my teaching in heritage-rooted Cantonese traditions, allowing me to share not just the rules and scoring, but the cultural depth of Hong Kong-style mahjong. I bring that cultural genuineness into every game with cultural context, language, history, etiquette, slang, stories, and Cantonese trash-talking.
If you are looking for American Mahjong, you’ve wandered into the wrong alley! There is absolutely no Charleston and no NMJL cards here. We play Hong Kong-style Mahjong.
Our lessons take place right in the comfort of my home, hosted by myself and my resident felines.
To keep our games running smoothly and to honor the heritage of the game, we have two non-negotiable house rules:
Embrace the Language: All participants must learn the Chinese characters and the proper names for each tile. No "bams" or "cracks"—we call them by their true names. I use Cantonese, but all Asian dialects are welcome.
Respect the Culture: There is absolutely no mocking, joking, or disrespecting the game terms, words, sounds, or culture. We keep our tables welcoming and deeply respectful of the tradition.
Whether you are a curious beginner ready to take your first pounce or a seasoned player looking to sharpen your claws, there is a seat at the table. Let’s wash the tiles, build the wall, and play!
