This project was inspired by MyFroggyStuff's Barbie-style donut box project! I used their printable as a template to make my own box design in a different size for larger dolls.
I generally followed the same design layout for most of the decals on the box, but I changed the theme from Barbie to Angelic Pretty and made the colours overall less saturated.
I also added a spot for a heart shaped cutout, so that the donuts inside will be visible even when the box is closed. In the end, I found this to be very useful, because the lid tended to have issues with the sides bowing out, and the fix caused it to not have a normal opening style for the lid anymore, so I'd prefer it to stay closed all the time even though it can technically open.
For this project, all I needed was cardstock, a printer, a ruler, a box cutter, and some double sided adhesive! I did find that my choice of tool for scoring the bends — a knitting needle — damaged the cardstock a bit, so the edges of the boxes are a bit rough looking.
The hearts were a bit difficult to cut out with the box knife. It's hard to be precise with it, and there's no guide you can use like when cutting straight lines with a ruler edge. I did end up using a ruler to help me cut the box main lines with a box cutter, but my first two test copies were made by cutting with scissors mainly, which didn't look as nice in my opinion.
Overall, the cutting and scoring process wasn't too bad, and didn't take all that long. I made a total of four boxes — two test copies, and two good copies — although I did keep one test copy as a permanently closed box for stacking.
Before assembling all the boxes with adhesive tape on the flaps, I glued sheets of clear thick plastic behind the heart cutouts. The final set of boxes ended up looking pretty good in my opinion!
I want to permanently glue mini donuts into the two boxes with open heart cutouts, but I'm not sure if I want to use the donuts I already have, or buy new artisan ones. The donuts I already own are simple, and the icing is just a flat sticker without much depth. Artisanal donuts would be more 3D and look more real, but it would cost way more to buy enough for two boxes, and might be hard to find in 1/3 scale.
Maybe my next project will be making donuts from polymer clay...
