Meloot (descendant of Chera dynasty) is a prominent varma family in kerala. During their dynasty period, The Meloot family branched themselves into two formations - Ruling authority and Military authority. Henceforth the military authority Meloot Varmas were acknowledged as (warrior) and upheld the kingdom's shield and administration. Varmas received principal royalty status from The Kingdom of Travancore Since 1827 for their service . " At present , Kalaripayattu is not practiced or followed in some of the Meloot families, yet they keep their tradition and heritage very close to them. Although Panicker titles are commonly used by other castes in Kerala they are different from Melootu Varma caste as " Panicker" is the title they got rewarded for their renowned military administration. The family is descended from the Ay/Venad family, Cheras, Pandyas and Cholas. People from this family belongs to the Thripappur and Chirava Swaroopams. Their parental house was Eraniel palace until the seventeenth century and later Padhmanabhapuram also, their present residency is known as Meloott Southern Manor earlier (Meloott Valiya Malika). Their central ancestral family home is Keezhperoor illam. Keezhperoor was the capital of Ay Kingdom and later Venad dynasty. During the Ay period, the place was known as Peryaoor.
Meloot Panicker culture is bit different from others. Both men and women in the family are trained to do Kalari since their childhood and this makes them independent and self-sufficent. They consider, treat and devote women in thier family as goddesses. Because of this, a girl child born in Meloot family can never change her family name / status / surname even after her marraige. It is also important for the Meloot - women to represent their family name during all considerable events in their life. Whereas, the men in the family and in-laws (men) can either gain the Meloot status or not, it's up to them. But women from other families can never attain the Status of Meloot Panicker and hence their children. So, the only women holding Meloot status in the family are the descendants of Meloot kshathriya women. Even if a woman from this Family is married to namboothiries, kshathriyas or other panickers { Nairs, Ezhavas (Buddhists or Jains) and Syrian Christians) } present days ( were strictly not allowed before) she still remains as a Meloot Varma for the rest of her life and will pass the status to her girl child.
Meloot Varma Family worships Sri Padhmanaba Swamy (Maha Vishnu) and Sri Padhmavathi Devi (Maha Lakshmi) as cheif deity and their family temple is known as Meloottu kudumbakshetram. Since dynasty period the main temple is located in Quilon (Desinganadu) and earlier there was a branch of this temple in Alappuzha too. Devotees offering Naranga Vilakku ( lime lamp) Shankarchana ( ocean conch lamp ) and Padhmaarchana at Meloot Temple with their faith for wholesomeness is noteworthy. Melootu kudumbakshetram was one of the richest temples during the Travancore Dynasty period but it ended on 12th April, 1835. Unfortunately, their abundant prosperity and treasures were looted by the foreign invaders and left with few hidden valuables. Now the main family temple is located in Desinganadu as Melootu Sri Pathmavadi Devi Kshethram. Ealier, Thirupalkadal Sreekrishna Swamy Temple was the family temple of Ay/Venad dynasty which is believed to be 1200 years old.
Meloot is a prominent Kshatriya (Varma - Travancore) family in kerala. Eventhough they have royal lineage and principal royalty they embrace the title of panicker as they are born warriors and they got rewarded with the title " Panicker" for their renowned military administration. Panicker title are also commonly used by other castes such as Nairs, Ezhavas (Buddhists or Jains) and Syrian Christians but they are all plainly different from Meloott Panicker Family and haven't kept any relationship or alliance with others before common era (CE) . At present, it is true that some people from Meloot Varma family does not have enough knowledge about their history and get confused and misconstrue themselves as Namboothiries and other Panickers.
Like the rest of Malayali women, Meloot Family women are also blessed with deluge of natural beauty. They are mostly seen with broad lotus eyes, wavy thick long hair, tanned skin tone, luscious lips and aesthetic body. They are an absolute beauty similar to the concept of their divine supreme ( Meloot Bhagavathy).
Since they start their Kalari Training from a very young age, they mostly have well built body constitution. They are primarily well talented and have great leadership qualities. Also, their charisma lies in those deep vivid eyes and polished behaviour.
