Melanie Fiona has little in her roots that would suggest a career as a soul singer. She hails from Canada and has West Indian roots. Still, she's created a sound that blends familiar melodies with brash lyrics and strong vocals.

It's not a Justin Bieber album without a megahit, and Justice's offering in that regard is "Peaches." The track blends the R&B elements Bieber has embraced over the years with the pop sensibilities he first broke out with, creating a track that epitomizes both styles. It's a celebration of the good things in life, and that's reflected in both the wavy melody and its playful lyrics.

It's been a dream of mine for a long time to make a Christmas EP. At first, the dream was to make a naughty EP and have all the songs be sexual and focus on a more risqu side of Christmas. Growing up, I always listened to naughty ones like "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" and "Santa Baby." But as I wrote the first couple songs, I had way more ideas and just wrote normal songs with Christmas lyrics, and it all became a very special project for me. It's always exciting to put new energy and life into classics and the traditions, so there's a lot of new and there's a lot of old.

Jason Aldean's single "Try That in a Small Town" didn't cause much of a ruckus when it dropped in May, but the promotional video for the song, released in July, certainly kicked a hornet's nest of dissatisfaction. The lyrics begin with a carjacking and a robbery, then confront advocates of gun control and flex how "good ol' boys, raised up right" will step up to defend their own. The song "refers to the feeling of a community that I had growing up," Aldean wrote on Twitter, "where we took care of our neighbors, regardless of differences of background or belief."

Just three days after Aldean's song reached the top, a folk song by an unknown artist with no previous history in the music business hit YouTube and spread like wildfire. "Rich Men North of Richmond," written and performed by Oliver Anthony, sparked a controversy of its own for a handful of lyrics shaming "obese welfare" recipients amid righteous blue-collar anger directed at politicians who are out of touch with the working class. ff782bc1db
