I've been looking for songs similar to the stuff Eels put out which from what I've seen is referred to as melancholia. I especially like Electro-Shock Blues (My Descent Into Madness, Last Stop: This Town, P.S. You Rock My World), Blinking Lights and Other Revelations (Things the Grandchildren Should Know), Beautiful Freak (Beautiful Freak and Flower) and Meet the Eels (I Need Some Sleep). Grandaddy's A.M. 180 also has that sound I really enjoy. Just some introspective, sorrowful yet somehow positive lyrics about life and the human condition and finding beauty or peace in the ugly, prefer songs that have a slightly cheery sound to them.

I heard that Beck, Sparklehorse and Radiohead are similar, but I have trouble listening to new music so some suggestions of similar songs or albums would be great, I am also trying to listen to more female artists. Thank you!

Personally, melancholic/sad music makes me come in touch with feelings, that I don't feel in my everyday life. I doesn't matter if it's rock, indie, classical or whatever, some music just gets to that uncharted place.

The aim of the study was to explore in depression the relationship between recent suicidal ideation and the different anhedonias taking into account the severity of depression. Recent studies have suggested that recent change of anhedonia and not state or trait anhedonia is associated with recent suicidal ideations even when the level of depression is controlled. Three samples were used (74 severe major depressives, 43 outpatients with somatic disorders presenting mild or moderate depression and 36 mild or moderate depressives hospitalized in the intensive coronary unit). Recent change of anhedonia was rated by the anhedonia subscale of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), state anhedonia by the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS), trait anhedonia by the TEPS (Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale), musical anhedonia by the BMRQ (Barcelona Music Reward Questionnaire), social recent change of anhedonia by the SLIPS (Specific Loss of Interest and Pleasure Scale), the severity of depression by the BDI-II and the distinction between melancholic and non-melancholic was found using a subscale of the BDI-II. Bivariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed in each sample. In severe major depressives and, notably, in melancholia, recent suicidal ideation was associated with trait anhedonia; however, in mild or moderate depression, recent suicidal ideation was associated with recent change of anhedonia. Musical anhedonia and social recent change of anhedonia were not associated with recent suicidal ideation. Trait anhedonia could be, in severe depression, a strong predictor of recent suicidal ideation.

Listening to music can cause experiences of nostalgia and melancholia. Although both concepts are theoretically related, to date they have not been analyzed together regarding their emotional and cognitive profiles. In this study, we identify their theoretical underpinnings and determine how they can be measured empirically. We analyze how listening to music causes nostalgia and melancholia, and whether both experiences are related to different behavioral intentions. To this end, we conducted an online experiment with 359 participants who listened to music they considered either nostalgic, melancholic, or neutral. Afterward, participants answered 122 questionnaire items related to nostalgia and melancholia. Using Structural Equation Modeling, and more specifically Multiple Indicators and Multiple Causes Modeling, we first developed two new scales: the Formative Nostalgia Scale and the Formative Melancholia Scale. Both scales consist of five items each. Results showed that listening to music indeed increased nostalgia and melancholia. Although considerably different, the concepts are related. Listening to nostalgic music increases melancholia, whereas listening to melancholic music does not increase nostalgia. Also, both experiences are related to different behavioral intentions. Whereas experiencing nostalgia was associated with a stronger intention to share the music and to listen to it again, experiencing melancholia revealed the exact opposite relation.

The pitch series begins with 1232 and 2131, and is then followed by the extension 2313 and 2131, to be concluded with an inversion of this expanded 16-note series (3212, 2313, 2131 and 2313).
