On May 19, 2024, a Bell 212 helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and several senior officials crashed near the city of Varzaqan in East Azerbaijan province. In this incident, Raisi and several other officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Governor of East Azerbaijan, lost their lives. Initial investigations revealed that the cause of the crash was the severe weather conditions and thick fog in the area, along with the helicopter carrying extra passengers.
