If you want rugged versatility, modular customization, and a secure memory-wire fit for active outdoor use like hiking, choose MEE audio Professional MX4; if you need surgical precision for classical music analysis, German engineering durability, and the widest frequency response for studio-grade listening, choose beyerdynamic DT 73.
• MEE audio Professional MX4: Delivers exceptional clarity with its quad-driver hybrid setup and offers a secure, all-day fit via flexible memory wire earhooks; however, it lacks the ultra-wide frequency extension found in pure reference monitors.
• beyerdynamic DT 73: Features a handcrafted TESLA.11 driver system optimized for classical instruments with massive isolation capabilities (-39 dB) and an extended 5–40,000 Hz range; yet, it omits the integrated microphone remote included with the MEE set.
• Who is this for?: The MEE audio pick suits musicians and hikers needing a reliable, customizable kit with a backup cable and mic, while the beyerdynamic choice is ideal for engineers and pianists demanding absolute tonal accuracy and passive noise rejection.
The MEE audio Professional MX4 PRO is built around the concept of total modularity and adaptability. Its standout feature is the quad-driver hybrid architecture, which combines a 10mm dynamic subwoofer with three balanced armatures. This configuration allows for linear bass response and crisp detail that feels balanced rather than colored by a single frequency peak. For someone spending hours outdoors on a trail, or on a stage, this balance ensures that the sound remains engaging without causing listener fatigue over long sessions. The design prioritizes a physical connection to the user through its ergonomic shape and flexible memory wire earhooks. These hooks conform to your ears, ensuring the monitors stay put even when you are moving briskly, making them a practical choice for on ear headphones for hiking contexts where stability is non-negotiable.
Comfort is not an afterthought here; it is engineered into the core design. The inclusion of five sets of eartips—ranging from silicone to Comply memory foam—means you can dial in a seal that works for your specific ear canal shape. The IP-rated sweat-resistant construction further cements its place as a device meant for active use. You get two detachable cables in the box: a standard audio-only line and a spare headset cable equipped with a built-in microphone and remote. This dual-cable approach is a significant advantage for anyone who needs to take calls while monitoring their audio or simply wants a backup solution if one cable fails. The carrying case, shirt clips, and ¼" adapter round out a complete kit that feels ready for immediate deployment without needing aftermarket purchases.

This product is best suited for performers who value the ability to customize their gear. The optional custom-fit eartips allow you to order 3D-printed versions that match your ear anatomy perfectly, and you can even engrave metal faceplates for personalization. If you are looking for clip on earbuds for hiking scenarios where you might lose standard earbuds, the memory wire retention and included shirt clips offer a security layer that many competitors lack. However, if your primary goal is strictly analytical work on orchestral recordings requiring the absolute lowest distortion possible across the entire audible spectrum, this unit might feel slightly less specialized than a dedicated studio monitor designed solely for that purpose.
The beyerdynamic DT 73 IE represents a different philosophy entirely, focusing on uncompromising fidelity and acoustic precision. Designed specifically for classical instruments, keys, pianists, and orchestral musicians, this in-ear monitor is voiced to deliver tonal clarity and detailed insight into the mix. At its heart lies the advanced TESLA.11 dynamic driver system, which achieves ultra-low distortion and high impulse fidelity. This translates to tight transients and sound that you can trust for precision mixing and mastering. If you are an engineer or a producer who needs to hear every nuance of a recording, the 5–40,000 Hz frequency response provides a wider canvas than most consumer or semi-pro IEMs, capturing harmonics that other units might roll off.
Durability and isolation are equally critical for the target audience of the DT 73. The design is based on hundreds of MRI ear scans, resulting in a compact form factor that sits deeply and securely in the ear canal. This ergonomic approach delivers a remarkable -39 dB of passive noise cancellation, effectively shutting out loud stage environments or noisy studios so you can focus purely on the audio. The construction is handmade in Germany, reflecting a commitment to quality that includes gold-plated MMCX connectors and a high-quality cable designed to reduce structure-borne noise. While it does not include a built-in microphone in the standard configuration, the robustness of the build suggests it is meant for professional rigors where a separate communication device is often preferred over a built-in mic.
This product fits the user who treats their hearing tools as precision instruments rather than just accessories. The inclusion of five pairs of silicone tips and three pairs of Comply memory foam tips allows for a highly customized fit, but the emphasis is on achieving the perfect acoustic seal for maximum isolation. The 16 ohm impedance ensures consistent, detailed playback across various interfaces, from laptops to portable rigs. It is an excellent choice for those who prioritize best headphones for hiking only insofar as they need absolute silence and clarity in a quiet environment, though its lack of active wind protection features (compared to sport-focused designs) makes it more of a studio-to-stage tool. The 2-year manufacturer warranty further underscores the confidence beyerdynamic has in the longevity of this component.
• Best for active movement and security → MEE audio Professional MX4: The flexible memory wire earhooks and included shirt clips provide a level of physical security that the DT 73 does not explicitly feature.
• Best for extreme isolation → beyerdynamic DT 73: With -39 dB passive noise cancellation derived from MRI-based ergonomics, it blocks more external noise than the standard isolation of the MX4.
• Best for frequency extension → beyerdynamic DT 73: The 5–40,000 Hz range captures ultra-high frequencies that the MX4's 20 Hz–20 KHz range cannot reach.
• Best for connectivity versatility → MEE audio Professional MX4: Includes a dedicated cable with a built-in microphone and remote, whereas the DT 73 relies on a standard audio-only cable.
• Best for classical/orchestral analysis → beyerdynamic DT 73: Voiced specifically for classical instruments and keys to reveal minute details in complex mixes.
• Best for modular customization → MEE audio Professional MX4: Offers interchangeable parts and optional custom-fit eartips with engraved faceplate options.
• Best for long-term durability → beyerdynamic DT 73: Handmade in Germany with IP65 certification against dust and water jets, backed by a 2-year warranty.
• Best for budget-friendly completeness → MEE audio Professional MX4: Comes with a comprehensive kit including two cables, multiple tip types, and a carrying case without requiring additional purchases.
In my opinion, I would buy the MEE audio Professional MX4 for general use and outdoor activities because the memory wire design and dual-cable kit make it infinitely more practical for real-world scenarios like hiking or touring. The ability to switch between a standard cable and one with a microphone adds a layer of utility that the beyerdynamic model simply cannot match in a single package. While the beyerdynamic DT 73 is undeniably superior for critical listening and studio work due to its wider frequency response and lower distortion, it feels too specialized for a buyer who needs one pair of monitors to handle both performance and daily mobility. If you are looking for best headphones for hiking that double as professional monitors, the MEE audio solution offers the right balance of comfort, security, and feature-rich versatility.
Yes, the MEE audio Professional MX4 is better suited for hiking due to its memory wire earhooks that prevent falling out during movement, while the beyerdynamic DT 73 offers superior isolation for quiet trails but lacks active retention features.
Neither product requires charging as both are wired in-ear monitors with no internal batteries, relying entirely on the connected audio source for power.
Both models offer passive noise cancellation through their in-ear design and custom eartips, with the beyerdynamic DT 73 claiming a higher isolation rating of -39 dB.
The MEE audio MX4 uses a quad-driver hybrid for a balanced, clear sound suitable for stage use, while the beyerdynamic DT 73 uses a TESLA.11 driver optimized for ultra-detailed classical and orchestral reproduction.
