If you want high-fidelity in-ear monitors that double as professional stage gear with a versatile wireless adapter, choose MEE audio MX1; if you need a dedicated travel transmitter specifically designed to share airplane entertainment between two pairs of headphones, choose Avantree Relay & SoundJet.
• MEE audio MX1: Offers pro-grade dynamic driver sound with a flexible wired-to-wireless combo pack and 14 hours of battery life, but requires you to pair it with separate Bluetooth headphones or use its included adapter for specific use cases.
• Avantree Relay & SoundJet: Delivers a specialized dual-headphone connection for flights with an impressive 25-hour battery life, but functions strictly as a transmitter and cannot play music from your phone directly without external pairing.
• Who it's for: The MEE audio MX1 fits musicians, audiophiles, and travelers who want premium isolation and versatility across multiple devices, while the Avantree unit is built exclusively for couples or solo travelers needing to sync with in-flight entertainment systems.
The MEE audio MX1 PRO is not just another set of earbuds; it is a complete monitoring system designed for people who demand clarity and control over their audio experience. At its core, this product utilizes a single full-range dynamic driver tuned to deliver balanced performance with crisp detail. This makes it suitable for a wide range of applications, from critical listening to live performances. What sets it apart immediately is the inclusion of the BT3 Hi-Res Bluetooth Audio Adapter within the box. This isn't an afterthought accessory; it transforms your wired in-ear monitors into a wireless powerhouse, allowing you to connect to phones, tablets, and computers while preserving the depth and dynamics of the original drivers.
For the traveler looking for in ear earbuds for airplane use, this kit offers a compelling solution through its passive noise cancellation and secure fit options. The design features flexible earhooks and a sliding cable cinch that keep the monitors comfortably locked in place, even during long hauls. You can switch seamlessly between a direct wired connection using the included stereo or headset cables, or go fully wireless using the BT3 adapter. That adapter supports advanced codecs like LDAC and the entire Qualcomm aptX family, including aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless, ensuring that the wireless link doesn't compromise the fidelity you expect from a professional monitor. With up to 14 hours of battery life on a single charge, you can cover most domestic flights and many international legs without hunting for an outlet.
However, this product is best suited for those who appreciate customization and durability. The kit comes with Comply memory foam eartips and silicone options to ensure a perfect seal, which is crucial for blocking out cabin noise. If you are serious about audio quality, you can even upgrade to custom-fit eartips molded to your ears later on. But you should skip this if you are looking for a simple, plug-and-play transmitter that connects directly to an airline seat jack without any additional setup. The MX1 is a sophisticated piece of hardware that requires a bit more engagement to set up correctly, particularly when configuring the Bluetooth adapter for optimal codec performance. It is for the user who wants one device that can serve as both a studio monitor and a premium travel companion, rather than a single-purpose tool.

The Avantree Relay & SoundJet R1 takes a completely different approach by focusing entirely on the pain points of modern air travel. Its primary function is to act as a premium Bluetooth transmitter that solves the age-old problem of shared entertainment on flights. Powered by an advanced Qualcomm chipset, this device is engineered specifically to support two Bluetooth headphones simultaneously. This means you can pair your own wireless earbuds with your partner's AirPods or noise-canceling headphones and watch a movie together without needing a split-cable adapter. It is a smarter wireless upgrade for couples or travel partners who want to enjoy in-flight entertainment side-by-side, offering a level of convenience that standard seat jacks simply do not provide.
When considering best wireless headphones for airplane scenarios where connectivity is key, the battery life here is a standout feature. The unit delivers up to 25 hours of reliable playtime on a single charge, which is significantly higher than many competing adapters. This capacity ensures that even the longest red-eye flights or multi-leg international trips will not drain the power before you reach your destination. The device leverages aptX Adaptive technology to maintain balanced sound and dependable wireless performance throughout the journey, minimizing latency issues that can ruin the viewing experience. It connects via a 3.5mm AUX input, making it compatible with the vast majority of aircraft entertainment systems that still rely on analog outputs.
Despite these strengths, there is a critical limitation you must understand before buying. This unit is a transmitter only; it is not designed to work with TVs, hearing aids, musical instruments, or as a standalone receiver for your phone or tablet. It does not pair directly with mobile devices to play your own music library unless those devices have a compatible output that feeds into the transmitter. Therefore, this product is not for the solo traveler who wants to listen to podcasts from their phone wirelessly. It is strictly for the scenario where you need to bridge the gap between the airplane's analog audio jack and your digital Bluetooth headphones. If your goal is to convert the seat's audio output to a wireless signal for one or two listeners, this is the tool for the job, but it lacks the versatility of a full headphone set or a multi-purpose adapter.

• Best for audio fidelity and customization → MEE audio MX1: The dynamic driver IEMs and support for lossless codecs like LDAC offer superior sound quality and the option for custom ear tips.
• Best for sharing content with a partner → Avantree Relay & SoundJet: Only the Avantree natively supports connecting two pairs of Bluetooth headphones simultaneously for shared in-flight viewing.
• Best for versatility and multi-device use → MEE audio MX1: The MX1 works wired or wireless with phones, tablets, and PCs, whereas the Avantree is restricted to transmitting to other Bluetooth devices.
• Best for active noise isolation → MEE audio MX1: The physical design with memory foam eartips and earhooks provides passive noise cancellation essential for loud environments.
• Best for simplicity in a travel setting → Avantree Relay & SoundJet: If your only goal is plugging into a seat jack and streaming to headphones, the dedicated design simplifies the process.
• Best for professional or critical listening → MEE audio MX1: The inclusion of a 10mm dynamic driver and professional-grade accessories makes it ideal for anyone sensitive to audio nuances.
• Best value for frequent travelers → Avantree Relay & SoundJet: The extended battery life and dual-stream capability address specific travel needs that generic adapters often miss.
After weighing the specifications and intended use cases, I would buy the MEE audio MX1 for my personal travel kit because it offers far greater utility beyond just the flight itself. The ability to use it as a high-quality wired monitor, then switch to a wireless setup with lossless audio support, gives me flexibility that a single-purpose transmitter cannot match. While the Avantree Relay & SoundJet is an excellent niche tool for couples sharing screens, the MEE audio MX1 stands as a comprehensive audio solution that excels as best wireless headset for airplane use while also serving my daily listening needs. For a traveler who values sound quality and adaptability, the MX1 is the smarter investment.
Yes, you can use the included BT3 Bluetooth adapter to connect the MX1 to an airplane's entertainment system, provided the system has a Bluetooth output or you use the wired connection with the adapter acting as a receiver (though the adapter is primarily a transmitter). Note that the MX1 itself is a receiver; you typically use it to receive audio from a source, unlike the Avantree which transmits from the seat jack.
No, the Avantree Relay & SoundJet is a Bluetooth transmitter only and is not compatible with phones or tablets for direct playback. It is designed specifically to take audio from an auxiliary jack, such as an airplane seat, and send it to Bluetooth headphones.
The Avantree Relay & SoundJet offers up to 25 hours of playtime on a single charge, which is longer than the MEE audio MX1's 14 hours of battery life, making it slightly better for extremely long journeys where charging isn't an option.
The MEE audio MX1 features flexible earhooks and includes Comply memory foam eartips designed for a secure and comfortable fit, along with passive noise cancellation to reduce fatigue during extended wear.
