LONGCHENPA
The Great Perfection
Meditations on Awakening — Inspired by Longchenpa
The true nature of awareness is beyond words and concepts
It cannot be grasped by thought or mere intellectual understanding
It manifests naturally when the mind is free
Arising through the teacher’s blessing and one’s own merit
Like looking at a treasure in your own hand, realization is immediate when pointed out by the teacher
...
All phenomena arise like emanations—vivid yet insubstantial
Samsara and Nirvana are not separate—both dissolve into pure awareness
When thoughts cease to be grasped
Samsara collapses and Nirvana manifests naturally
The mind becomes vast, luminous, and free from concepts
...
Thoughts stir and dissolve like ripples on water
All movement within mind is illusory
Like waves on the ocean of primordial wisdom
When awareness recognizes itself
All mental elaborations fade into the vast expanse of emptiness
...
Realization does not grow or diminish—it is like space
It cannot be forced or willed into being
Like a lamp blazing in the darkness
It is seen by those with fortune and devotion
But remains invisible to those lost in concepts or doubt
True realization is not intellectual—it is a direct, living experience
...
The path to realization is opened through the blessing of the teacher
This truth cannot be understood through logic alone
It is revealed through direct transmission
Just as the sun cannot be seen by the blind
The mind’s radiance is unseen by those caught in conceptual thinking
...
Awareness is always present but often unrecognized
When the teacher reveals it
It is like waking from a deep sleep—suddenly it is clear
Once realized, there is no need to alter or fabricate anything
The mind rests naturally, luminous and empty
...
When awareness is recognized
Objects appear, yet there is no grasping
Thoughts arise, yet no fixation occurs
Awareness is clearer than before
Like a sky free of clouds
This clarity is the teacher’s gift
Passed through an unbroken lineage of wisdom
...
Through Guru Yoga one prays for the vision
That all appearances are merely emanations, expressions of awareness
Everything perceived—forms, thoughts, sensations
Are empty and luminous, like a mirage or reflection
In meditation, rest where thoughts cannot take hold
Thoughts arise and vanish naturally
No clinging
No grasping
No rejection
...
Even though objects appear
They are not grasped as real
The mind rests beyond subject and object
Like light shining without a source or direction
When awareness is left uncontrived and natural
All duality dissolves into space-like luminosity
...
See everything as an emanation
Neither real nor unreal, beyond fixation
When the mind stops grasping
Even the path itself dissolves
In this great openness
There is no fear
No expectation
No struggle
...
Enlightenment is not created—it is already present
There is nothing to purify, nothing to improve
Just as the sun does not need effort to shine
Awareness is naturally radiant when left uncontrived
This is the Great Perfection (Dzogchen)
...
At this stage, appearances remain, but the mind is free
There is no separation between meditation and post-meditation
The yogi moves through life like a dream
Acting freely, without clinging, without struggle
Thoughts vanish in the moment they arise
Leaving only the vast, luminous openness of pure awareness
...
The past, present, and future dissolve into the single expanse of timeless awareness
A yogi moves without constraints
Spontaneous
Effortless
Beyond all limitation
This is the moment when wisdom fully manifests
...
Lesser paths require effort—they engage the energies and channels of the body
But the Great Perfection requires no struggle
Resting in awareness itself, all is accomplished naturally
Like a great ruler who governs effortlessly
Awareness achieves everything without striving
...
As the mind rests in its natural state
Thoughts dissolve into pure luminosity
Samsara is exhausted
Nirvana is revealed
In this state there is no clinging
No self
No other
Only vast, open, limitless wisdom
...
Beyond meditation, beyond striving
There is only the spontaneous perfection of all qualities
Here the ultimate truth is neither gained nor lost
Nothing to remove
Nothing to add
This is the final realization
Seeing reality as it is
Free
Open
Luminous
...
May all beings realize the Great Perfection
May wisdom shine forth like the rising sun, dispelling all ignorance
May the luminous eye of awareness reveal the path of liberation to all
...
This Pinnacle Teaching is the highest vision, the ultimate of the Great Perfection
It cannot be grasped by thought
But only recognized directly
Rest in awareness
See all as an emanation
Let wisdom unfold naturally
...
Unmoving, free of fabrication
The radiant mind is self-arising wisdom
Nothing to seek, nothing to fear
This is the Great Perfection
