Dimetindene maleate, an alkylamine derivative, is a sedating antihistamine ( Refer to ); it is mildly sedative and is reported to have mast-cell stabilising properties. It is used for the symptomatic relief of allergic conditions including urticaria and angioedema ( Refer to ) and rhinitis ( Refer to ), and in pruritic skin disorders ( Refer to ). It is also used in compound preparations for the symptomatic treatment of coughs and the common cold ( Refer to ).
Dimetindene maleate is given in an oral dose of 1 to 2 mg three times daily; modified-release preparations are also available. It may also be given by the intravenous route. Dimetindene maleate is applied topically as a 0.1% gel or lotion although, as with other antihistamines, there is a risk of sensitisation. It is used in a strength of 0.025% in compound nasal preparations.
