Washington sensed that Cornwallis was pretending to be sick. That was disrespectful to Washington. Therefore, Washington told O'Hara that he would have to surrender his sword to Washington's subordinate, General Benjamin Lincoln.
To the very end the British leaders did all they could to avoid surrendering to Washington.
