General Washington ordered his men to perch the cannon on the heights overlooking Boston so that they would be very visible to General Howe.
The display of arms was enough to scare Howe out of the City.
Washington wrote:
“The enemy believed we had the advantage, and fearing great annoyance from our cannon, decided to retreat, and they left in as much hurry, chaos and confusion as ever, on the 17th of March, not even taking time to load their luggage; but abandoning the King's property in Boston to the amount, we estimate, of 30 or £40,000 in Provisions, Stores, etc. Many Pieces of Cannon, some Mortars, and a number of Shot, Shells etc. are also left.”
Congress commissioned a coin to celebrate this event. Hostibus Primo Fugatis: "Where the Enemy First Fled."
