Cornwallis' Absence at the Surrender

• Having lost to the Americans, British General Cornwallis was so humiliated and embarrassed that he faked an illness to avoid having to surrender to Washington.

• Cornwallis sent a subordinate, General O'Hara to surrender. O'Hara, however was also too embarrassed to surrender to Washington. He tried to hand his sword over to General Rochambeau of the French Army.
