It is December, 1776.
The United States is less than 6 months old.
Most of the soldiers in the Continental Army have only agreed to stay on until the end of the year. They have been running away since Long Island and they intend to go home on January 1.
On January 1, the Army will be depleted. Washington dictated a letter to Hamilton, to be sent to Congress on December 20 explaining the crisis.
