It's like Plants Vs Zombies. You're defending your base along multiple horizontal lanes - though some monsters weave around. Also unlike in PVZ, you can spew out mouse-aimed bullets from a stationary mech, as well as call down air strikes or deploy tanks (once you've unlocked them). There's not much to it, but constantly deciding which kaijus to prioritise meant I felt like I was taking a more active role than in other tower defence games I've dabbled with.

But a little bit of helpful advice if I may. You see, I did my usual with this kind of game, and just jumped straight in. While I won the first couple of missions, I got battered on the third. Turns out that playing the tutorial is a really good idea, as I discovered that not only can you take one of the mechs under your control, but you can also get off the wall and go for a stomp about.

And open up it really does. After every mission, we are awarded research points and currency, and these can be spent in the hub to make us better, stronger and faster. Well, maybe not the last one. We can research new weapons and defences, allowing us to place such delights as grinders and air defence towers on the battlefield (the air defence is a godsend, as the little flying bugs bypass your walls and attack the base directly). All of these new additions can also be upgraded, and a bank of fully upgraded grinders is a formidable barrier to any Kaiju who dares get near. In addition, we can also spend money to upgrade our mechs, giving them extra ammo, more firepower and better armour to make shooting Kaiju even more fun.

The game puts you in the role of Commander, overseeing a squadron of powerful mechs as they defend the city from waves of kaijus (big monsters, essentially) and it plays out in a similar way to Plants vs. Zombies in that your units are on the left of the screen and the monsters arrive from the right.

In Mechs V Kaijus, you assume the role of a Commander overseeing a squadron of powerful mechs defending the city from monstrous Kaijus. The gameplay layout, reminiscent of titles like Plants vs. Zombies, positions your units on the left and the Kaijus advancing from the right. This setup creates a dynamic and engaging battlefield where strategic placement is key to survival.

As the boss of the mechs, you construct, equip and send your big bots out to defend the city walls from attack, with clever positioning of the usual towers and traps to keep the massive nasties at bay. A shame it is single player only, as I like the idea of having a friend rampaging at you with the squishy beasts.

The Episode II update finishes up the campaign, including adding new pilots and mechs, a complete tech tree, new challenges, offensive missions, and many other tweaks and balance changes. You can read the full details here. 17dc91bb1f
