Reopening Schools

MESA EA Return to IN-Person Learning Survey:

The Mesa Education Association ran a survey to MPS employees from July 21 - Aug 3rd. During that time 1,313 employees responded to the open survey. Of the respondents, 85% believe that MPS should not return to in-person learning at an August 17th deadline. The largest percent of respondents saying that schools should not return for in-person learning until it is deemed safe by health professionals.

In order to participate in the survey employees needed to log in using an mps email address and were not allowed to submit multiple responses. The MEA used similar questions to those used by the AEA in their survey. This was in an effort to expand the data we received from their survey that was held during the end of June and keep track of consistent data.

Mesa EA Data from the Arizona EA Reopening School Survey:

During the week of June 30, the Arizona Education Association conducted a survey of 7,651 educators across the state. The statewide data showed that 8 in 10 respondents agree that schools should reopen only after public health experts determine it is safe to return with adequate planning and equipment to protect school employees, students, and families from COVID-19.

That data has been distributed to local associations like the Mesa Education Association so that they can share the data tied to educators in their districts. In our own Mesa Public Schools data the survey found that 75% of respondents agree that schools should reopen only after public health experts determine it is safe to return with adequate planning and equipment to protect school employees, students, and families from COVID-19.

MEA Reopening Schools Feedback Document

On June 25th and 26th, the Mesa Education Association met with certified and classified staff from across the district in four virtual forums. In these forums we asked educators to share their concerns, questions, and possible solutions around the three draft plans put forward by MPS for reopening schools in August. We gathered input from preschool teachers, to bus drivers, and every role in between. Educators were broken into smaller groups in order to allow for more voice and discussion so we could be sure that we heard concerns beyond a survey.

We are sharing the document of concerns, questions, and suggestions with district leadership and the MPS School Board.
