18th Century Stays
18th Century Stays
These stays are part of an 18th-century working woman's costume. The costume was made following patterns from The American Duchess Guide to 18th-century dressmaking, and Norah Waugh's The Cut of Women's Clothes.
Even though the costume is based on a historically accurate design, the colour palette is exclusively monochromatic with red accents.
The fabric did not have to be historically accurate so I chose o use some black and white upholstery that depicts a man being rejected by a woman in a garden. I decided to use a pattern that included a front opening that did not go all the way down. Like that, when opened, it appears as if the lovers were being ripped apart which is emphasised by the red lacing.
