Astronomy

Class Rules and Daily Expectations:

Grade scale- Grades will be updated on Skyward regularly.

100-93 = A, 92.9-90 = A- 89.5-88 = B+, 87.9-82 = B, 81.9-80 = B- 79.9-78 = C+, 77.9-72 = C, 71.9-70 = C-

69.9-67 = D+, 66.9-60 = D Below 59.9 = F 59.9% is an ‘F,’ and will not be rounded up.

Note book-a notebook for notes is suggested for this class. You will be provided one at the beginning of the class. All materials should be kept until the end of the year.

Daily routine-the plan for the day will be posted in the assigned place. Read what is written there and get started.

Assignments-done in blue/black ink or pencil (pencil is preferred) unless otherwise directed.

Late papers-will not be accepted after the test/quiz/assessment for that section. Up until the assessment for the section, late work will receive full credit. Once quarter/semester grades are entered, work due during that quarter/semester will not be accepted.

Tests- tests will be open notebook and assignment. Electronic references will not be allowed.

**Interaction/electronic use while tests are out will result in 0 points for that test.

Retakes: there are no retakes for tests in this class.

Tardy/late policy: in room before bell begins to ring. Miss less than 10 minutes, marked ‘Late,’ miss more than 10 minutes of class, marked ‘Tardy.’

Cell phones/electronics: must be put away unless being used for a specific class purpose.

Absences-if you are absent, you are responsible for getting missed work before or after school. I will also provide missed work to you or your parent through school e-mail address below. For excused absences, an equal amount of school days as absences will be given to make up the work if the student was not present when it was assigned.

Plagiarism-will be dealt with as per IHS policy. Assignment/quiz/test will receive a 0 grade in skyward.

Grade breakdown-all points on graded work will count equally toward the grade in class. There will be no rounding of grades.

End of class-everything must be cleaned up and put back like it was when you came into the room before anyone leaves.

Respect-only one person talks in class at a time, no matter whether it is myself or another student. During solo work time, it should be quiet. During lab and group time, the volume should stay as low as possible.

Extra work time-must be scheduled. Before school or nest time is best.

Questions-if you have a question, ask!!! Do not expect me to read your mind. The only wrong question is the one you do not ask. Questions may also be addressed to my school e-mail account, see below.

Astronomy topic outline

Historical Astronomy: from ancient to modern

*included in this section will be the development of calendars and relationship to agriculture

What we ‘know’ now: beginning with our universe and working our way back to earth

*included in this section will be formation of features in the universe, gravitational functions, chemistry of the universe (and how we know), universe changes over time, and distances.

Space flight: from the early beginning to our current space endeavors and the future

*included in this section will be the ‘Lander Project’ and the ‘Launch Project.’ Also included here will be possible colonization and living on places besides Earth.

A biography of Jake McKinzie:

Born June 15, 1970, in Memphis, Tenn. Graduated from Glencoe High School in Hillsboro, Ore., in 1989.

Attended Washington State University, Finished Biology degree, 1995. Student teaching, fall of 1996, teaching credentials received Jan. 1997. State Professional certificate update earned, May 2008.
