On April 8, 2023, coalition coordinator attended Kids Day at Ford Canyon Park in Gallup, NM and distributed approximately 340 toddler books. Snacks were shared with everyone who stopped by the table and to all who chose to "hopscotch" past the tent. Avenues Early Childhood Program and the Community Pantry were also present at the event, along with many other community organizations.
Families seemed to prefer the toddler books on ABCs, Colors, Animals, and Counting, and interestingly, the older siblings appreciated the images in the book on Colors and picked up a copy for themselves. Toddlers choosing their own book gravitated toward the Animals, Baby Things, and books with a young child on the cover. There are many ways we can support community and families in early literacy. Raising Readers has resources at: https://www.raisingreaders.org/blog/category/early-childhood-literacy/ The The Book Fairy Pantry Project looks very doable. The coalition also supported the Navajo Indigenous LAUNCH program's Week of the Young Child events which ran daily from April 3-7, 2023. The coalition extended support with several $25.00 Walmart Gift Cards for presenters and raffles, along with delicious Camille's wraps on Artsy Thursday; toddler books and flashy toys as a distraction during hearing screenings on Work Together Wednesday.
A pat on the back to all the organizations focusing on the wellbeing of children and families throughout communities.

Why look at Equity Now?
MCECC volunteers reflected on what the coalition would undertake to establish a governance framework continuously rooted in equity practice and principles. The big question, “How to gauge current membership understanding of equity principles and practices now and in the future”, was the conversation leading to setting the following Equity Goals:
Maintain continuous planning to integrate Equity for all Strategic Plan goals, objectives and activities.
Offer coalition and family training to deepen shared understanding of what equity means for coalition success.
Identify local resources (including funding) to establish a continuous and sustainable practice.
A commitment from members to embrace equity training as part of governance helps to develop a shared language to effectively communicate on race with an increased comprehensive systemic awareness. (MCECC Strategic and Evaluation Plan, 2023).
The coalition has the opportunity to enter as a learning cohort with Embracing Equity, a New Mexico based organization that is prepared to support communities. As a group MCECC could move forward together to gain further understanding and a shared language to effectively communicate on race with an increased comprehensive systemic awareness. If you are interested in joining a cohort, please share with the coalition coordinator and sign up for a cohort that meets your Schedule. Embracing Equity Mission and Vision
Mission: Embracing Equity cultivates the mindsets and practices necessary to create an affirming, inclusive, and equitable educational ecosystem.
Vision: A just society where all children are affirmed in their whole humanity and nurtured to their fullest potential.
Join ECECD this week for the Gallup PreK roadshow session Tuesday, April 11, 2023 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Gallup McKinley County Schools Student Support Center 640 Boardman, Gallup, NM 87301.
The FY24 application for New Mexico PreK is now open!

The New Mexico Legislature appropriated $98M to ECECD to enhance and expand the NM PreK program. ECECD is seeking applications from eligible providers to expand, enhance, or create new PreK slots and classrooms statewide, especially in areas where there is a lack of high-quality PreK for children and families.
This is the largest expansion of PreK in the state’s history and one that will require communities to come together in collaboration and coordination to create an equitable, robust mixed-delivery system that supports parent choice.
ECECD is hosting several virtual orientation sessions and ECECD leadership and PreK staff are touring the state to host in-person events to discuss how school based, community based, Head Start, and Tribal early care and education programs can participate in this historic PreK expansion. Spanish interpretation available at all sessions.
