Block leader: Dr. Shah
Block Length: January 2023 - April 2023 (4 months)
The Basics
As our population ages, every physician will benefit from learning to work with and care for elderly patients; that’s why Mayo set up the longitudinal Senior Sages Program. You’ll kick off the program by meeting as a class with the course director, Dr. Shah, who will teach you some important information to know when working with the geriatric population. Then, you’ll be paired with a Senior Sage: a senior citizen buddy (or buddies). You’ll meet with them three times over the course of your first year to discuss some of the challenges they face, including daily functioning, receiving care, and managing medications. The Senior Sages program will continue longitudinally through years 2, 3, and 4.
Assessments
After each meeting with your Senior Sage, you’ll need to write a reflection on a Brightspace discussion board. You’ll also need to write a response to the reflections written by your classmates in your small group. As long as you complete the assignments in time and are reflecting on the experience, you will do very well in this course.
Recipes for Success
Senior Friends - Have fun with this course. It’s a great opportunity to learn the skills needed to effectively and compassionately care for our aging population, and simultaneously a chance to glean from your sage’s life wisdom (and hopefully gain a new friend too)!
