What is an interest group?
An interest group is an organization created by Mayo students and faculty in order to provide students with an inside perspective on different topics, as well as to offer educational and networking opportunities in various medical specialties. Interest groups are run by students for students, and usually offer free food during in-person events (or lunch vouchers)!
How do I join one?
To join an interest group, you simply attend the meetings. Each interest group will send an invitation to the first meeting to the entire class. After that, some will limit their announcements to those that sign up for further emails, while others will continue to notify the entire medical school when they have meetings, so make sure to sign up for the ones you like! Given COVID restrictions, some meetings may continue to be virtual via Zoom while others may transition to in-person meetings. Interest groups are not like in college, you do not have to attend a certain number of meetings or meet specific requirements. Simply attend whatever interests you when you are available.
What do I gain from joining an interest group?
Interest groups provide a great opportunity to learn about different aspects of medicine and medical careers. You’ll get to network with faculty and residents, and meet other students with similar interests! Some interest groups will provide you with shadowing and research opportunities during their meetings, while others will lead thought-provoking discussions into topics such as medical ethics, equity, and the future of medicine. Certain interest groups will also offer group selectives for you to further explore the specialty of interest. If you really enjoy your time in an interest group, you can then apply to be on the leadership for that interest group during your second year.
But what if I’m interested in something that doesn’t have an interest group already?
Take charge! We’re all unique, but there is a good chance other people at MCASOM will share your interest. Gather up some students, get together, look for mentors, think of a catchy name, and create your own interest group!
