Many teachers get intimidated by teaching International Business. I find it so interesting and, if presented in an engaging way, your students will love it! I have seen such an increase in student interest in regards to global business after the Covid-19 pandemic supply chain issues and then the Ukraine-Russia War. Students are curious and ask great questions.

A particular strength of the academic programs offered by ZHAW School of Management and Law (SML) is the opportunity for students to closely interact with companies and organizations. Supporting businesses in their international activities and supporting students in acquiring international business and intercultural skills are two important goals of the Department International Business and the International Management Institute.

We are actively seeking companies and organizations that would like to work together with us. As part of their coursework, students from our BSc International Management and MSc International Business programs examine the international business challenges and develop tailored recommendations and solutions.

The results can include a conceptual solution, strategic analysis, business or implementation plan, depending on the defined project scope and level of complexity. Under the supervision of a faculty coach, the solutions include the application of the latest management theories and concepts as well as follow methodological and structured approaches. All communication and project presentation will be in English.

Company input usually consists of a kick-off meeting, one meeting to confirm the interim status and clarify any issues, as well as attendance at the final presentation. Upon completing the project, the company partner receives a proposed solution in the form of a final business report (elaborated by the students) and a presentation in English.

The International Management Institute focuses on the effects of globalization and the challenges affecting international business activities. In addressing these issues, we rely on intercultural competence and business expertise, supported by many years of research and the practical experience of our lecturers and staff. In our activities, we also benefit from the close ties we have established over time with international organizations, corporations, and professional associations.

A competent team of international management specialists with many years of professional experience are the coaches and supervisors of the MSc and BSc international business projects: We are looking forward to challenging questions, which we approach together with our students in a practice-oriented way.

GAP engagements are true consulting projects, but they are also learning experiences for students, where each project host is instrumental in the education of future business leaders. Project hosts serve multiple roles; they are both clients and partners. As client-partners, our hosts expect the same quality of deliverables, adherence to deadlines, rigorous work ethic, attention to detail, professionalism, and critical problem solving skills one might receive from a top consulting firm. However, as partners, GAP becomes an experience far greater than the final output. Students immerse themselves into the organization and the business challenge, resulting in transformational experiences

The important distinction is that GAP client-partners and their accompanying projects are meticulously screened and selected. Each client-partner is sourced to provide a variety of cross-disciplinary projects in a range of industries and with organizations of all shapes and sizes.

A GAP engagement begins prior to the fall semester when the company host and Fisher College of Business define the business problem and formulate a high-level scope of work. Students apply to be considered in August and September and learn their placements in November. While the program course starts in January, 2024, project global travel happens during the spring break week, and culminates at the end of the course in April with a virtual presentation of project findings, an in-depth analysis, and specific, actionable recommendations to the client.

Over 14 weeks, teams of 4 - 6 students are advised by a faculty functional expert and devote many hours collectively to solving the business challenge. Students attend a required three-credit spring course that hones their consulting skills, and additionally, teams develop a keen awareness of the cultural and business environment while meeting regularly with their clients and advisors.

GAP eligibility and participation are based on a student being fully prepared for the multidisciplinary aspect of GAP projects. Therefore, the GAP program is open to applicants who meet the following criteria:

Step 3 - Submit your brief to our students

All project briefs are posted on our secure, password-protected intranet. Student teams will choose up to three projects to bid for. Your project could be chosen by up to 12 teams.
