This Privacy Policy describes how Maya – AI Travel Planner ("Maya," "we," "our," or "the App") collects, uses, and shares information when you use our mobile application. By downloading or using Maya, you agree to this Privacy Policy.
1.Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide
Travel Queries: When you chat with Maya, your messages are sent to a third-party AI service (Google Gemini via Replicate) to generate travel itineraries and responses.
Voice Input (Chat): If you use the voice input feature in chat, your speech is processed by Apple's Speech Recognition framework to convert it to text. The resulting text is handled the same as typed messages.
Voice Translation: If you use the Voice Translation feature, your speech is processed by Apple's Speech Recognition framework to convert it to text. The transcribed text is then sent to Google Gemini API for translation. We do not store, record, or transmit raw audio data to our servers.
Text Translation: If you use the Smart Translation feature, the text you enter is sent to Google Gemini API for translation processing. Translation results and history are stored locally on your device.
Photo Translate / AI Photo Recognition: If you use the Photo Translate feature, photos you capture or select from your library are sent to Google Gemini API for content recognition, identification, and description. Images are not permanently stored on our servers.
Photos (Journal): If you add photos to your travel journal, they are stored locally on your device in the app's sandboxed storage.
Travel Journal Notes: Any text notes you write in the travel journal are stored locally on your device.
Notification Preferences: If you set departure reminders, the departure date and trip name are stored locally on your device to schedule local notifications.
Translation History and Favorites: Your translation records and favorites are stored locally on your device using SwiftData. You can delete them at any time in Settings.
1.2 Information Collected Automatically
Destination Names: When you view an itinerary, the destination name may be sent to Open-Meteo (weather service) and Frankfurter (currency exchange service) to retrieve weather forecasts and exchange rates. No personal information is included in these requests.
1.3 Information We Do NOT Collect
We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, or any account credentials.
We do not collect location data or GPS coordinates.
We do not collect device identifiers, advertising IDs, or analytics data.
We do not use cookies or tracking technologies.
We do not collect payment or financial information.
We do not store or retain raw audio recordings from voice input or voice translation.
We do not permanently store photos submitted for Photo Translate on any server.
2.How We Use Your Information
We use the information described above solely to:
Generate personalized travel itineraries and respond to your queries via AI.
Translate text and voice input between supported languages (English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French, German).
Recognize and identify content in photos, including landmarks, food, signs, and menus.
Provide text-to-speech playback of translations using Apple's speech synthesis.
Provide weather forecasts for your travel destinations.
Provide currency exchange rate information.
Store your saved itineraries, translation history, journal entries, and notification preferences locally on your device.
Send you local push notifications for trip departure reminders that you explicitly schedule.
We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, or any purpose other than providing the App's core functionality.
3.Third-Party Services
Maya relies on the following third-party services:
Google Gemini (via Replicate, Inc.) – Receives your chat messages to generate AI travel planning responses. Also receives text for translation and photos for AI recognition and identification.

Apple Speech Recognition – Processes audio from your microphone (only when you actively tap the mic button) for voice-to-text conversion in both chat and translation features. Audio may be processed on-device or via Apple servers depending on your device and settings.

Apple Speech Synthesis (AVSpeechSynthesizer) – Used to read translations aloud. Text is processed locally on your device. No data is sent to external servers for this feature.
Open-Meteo – Receives destination city name to provide weather forecasts.

Frankfurter API – Receives base currency code only to provide exchange rates.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your information to any third party.
4.Data Storage and Security
Local Storage Only: All user data — including saved itineraries, translation history, translation favorites, journal entries, journal photos, and notification preferences — is stored exclusively on your device using Apple's secure storage frameworks (SwiftData, UserDefaults, and the app's Documents directory).
No Server: We do not operate any servers or cloud databases. We do not have access to your locally stored data.
API Communications: Messages, translation text, and photos sent to the AI service (Replicate/Google Gemini) are transmitted over HTTPS encryption. We do not store your conversations, translations, or photos on any server; however, Replicate and Google may process and temporarily store data according to their respective privacy policies.
Sandboxed Storage: Photos and journal data are stored within the App's sandboxed file system and are not accessible to other apps.
Audio Data: Raw audio from voice input and voice translation is used only for real-time speech-to-text conversion and is not stored, recorded, or transmitted by the App.
5.Data Retention and Deletion
Local Data: Your data is retained on your device for as long as you keep the App installed. You may delete individual saved itineraries at any time by swiping to delete within the App. You may delete translation history and favorites in Settings.
Complete Deletion: Uninstalling the App will permanently delete all locally stored data, including saved itineraries, translation history, journal entries, photos, and preferences.
Third-Party Data: Data processed by Replicate and Google Gemini is subject to their respective data retention policies. Please refer to their privacy policies linked in Section 3.
Notification Data: You can cancel scheduled notifications at any time through your device's Settings app.
6.Device Permissions
Maya may request the following device permissions. All permissions are optional and the App will function with limited features if denied:
Microphone: Required for Voice Translation and voice input in chat. Audio is used only for real-time speech recognition and is never stored or transmitted as audio data.
Camera: Required for Photo Translate to capture photos for AI recognition. Photos are sent to Google Gemini API for processing and are not permanently stored on any server.
Photo Library: Required for Photo Translate to select existing photos for AI recognition, and for adding photos to the travel journal. Journal photos are stored locally only.
Notifications: Required for trip departure reminders. Notification data is stored locally on your device.
You can revoke any permission at any time through your device's Settings app.
7.Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the following rights:
Access: You can view all your stored data directly within the App.
Deletion: You can delete your data by removing individual itineraries, clearing translation history, or by uninstalling the App.
Opt-Out of AI Processing: You may choose not to use the chat or translation features.
Opt-Out of Voice Input: Voice input is entirely optional. You can type your queries and translations instead.
Opt-Out of Photo Features: Photo Translate is entirely optional. You can use text or voice translation instead.
Opt-Out of Notifications: You can deny or revoke notification permissions in your device's Settings at any time.
For EU/EEA Residents (GDPR)
Our legal basis for processing your data is your explicit consent (by choosing to send messages, use voice input, use translation, or submit photos) and the performance of the service you request. You have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict processing, data portability, and object to processing. To exercise these rights, contact us at the email below.
For California Residents (CCPA)
We do not sell your personal information. You have the right to know what data we collect, request deletion of your data, and not be discriminated against for exercising your privacy rights.
8.Children's Privacy
Maya is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or under 16 in the EU/EEA). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the App, please contact us immediately and we will take steps to delete such information.
9.International Data Transfers
When you use the AI chat, translation, or Photo Translate features, your messages, text, and photos may be processed by servers located in the United States (Replicate, Inc. and Google LLC). By using these features, you consent to the transfer of your data to these servers. All transfers are protected by HTTPS encryption.
10.Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by updating the "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy. Your continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
