Scott Summers was born in Anchorage, Alaska, as the eldest child of Christopher and Katherine Summers, and the oldest brother to Alex Summers. While on a flight with his family, Christopher was attacked by the Shi'ar Empire. Thinking for the safety of their children first, Christopher and Katherine gave their children the only parachute on the plane, and pushed them off for their safety.
Alex landed just fine, but Scott? Scott suffered a traumatic brain injury during the fall, and with that, his mutation was activated for the first time. However, the brain injury had inflicted a number of negative ailments upon Summers, most notable of which being the proverbial short-circuiting of the off-switch to his powers. Every time he opens his eyes, his devastating optic blasts will emit, and there’s no way to shut them off.
Scott was lost for quite some time, being placed in an orphanage until a mutant criminal by the name of Jack Winters noticed the boy, seeing him as a valuable asset in crime. He tried teaching Scott how to use his powers for crime, and this training would turn into physical abuse whenever Scott refused to comply. However, another mutant took notice of Scott Summers; a telepath by the name of Charles Xavier, and he would soon take Scott under his wing, training him to be the leader of a superhero team with the intent purpose of promoting equality between humans and mutants: the X-Men.
Taking up the code name of Cyclops, Scott would be among the first class of X-Men along with Hank McCoy, Bobby Drake, Warren Worthington III, and Jean Grey, the latter of whom Scott would begin to harbor romantic feelings for. He would come into his own as the leader of the X-Men on their missions, even as the team grew in size.
And then M-Day happened.
Within the span of moments, 91.4% of the Mutant population was suddenly de-powered, reducing the total number of Mutants on the Earth to somewhere in the low triple-digits. Mutants were an endangered species. And all of a sudden, it wasn't just about being feared and hated. It was about having a target painted on your back. But Scott was committed to the dream of Charles Xavier, so he took it upon himself to ensure the survival of Mutantkind, no matter the cost. Even when it cost him some very close friendships.
It was the Phoenix Force which brought salvation. With his granddaughter from the future by his side, Scott intended to use the Phoenix to save Mutants from extinction. This put him, and the X-Men who sided with him, in direct opposition of the Avengers, who wished to destroy the Phoenix. Through their errors, the Phoenix was split into five parts, and Cyclops was made the host of one of these five parts. This would culminate in him being possessed by the Dark Phoenix and murdering Charles Xavier. While his plan would succeed, and new Mutants would come into being, he was arrested and charged with the murder of Xavier.
Having broken out of prison, Scott continues to do his part in keeping Charles Xavier's dream alive. Even if the world sees him as a Mutant terrorist, Scott Summers knows the truth: that he is an X-Man, fighting to protect Mutants in a world that fears and hates them.

YESTERDAY COMES TODAY
After the events of M-Day, Cyclops had become more pragmatic in the preservation of the Mutant Species, the once bustling face of mankind’s evolution having been reduced to a total worldwide population of 198: making mutantkind an endangered species. The breaking point came with Cyclops using the Phoenix Force to rebirth the species, creating new mutants, but in doing so, he had become possessed by the Dark Phoenix and murdered Charles Xavier. Following this, Cyclops soon became the face of mutant terrorism, and Hank McCoy, the Beast, could no longer stand by and watch this self-destruction. Traveling into the past, he pulled out the original five X-Men, bringing them into the present to try and force down Scott. The plan failed, and worse yet, the original five X-Men were unable to return to the past; including a younger Cyclops. Here to stay, he, along with the other members of the Original 5, had dedicated themselves to Xavier’s Dream, disregarding the future warnings.
[I am ignoring how Teen!Scott switched to the New Xavier School, as I have always felt that it is more in character for him to have remained a part of the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning]
